Samsung Electronics lauded with 2022 SEAL Business Sustainability Award
As one of the largest tech companies on the planet, Samsung Electronics also manufactures a veritable cornucopia of products from smartphones to displays and over the years, they’ve made massive inroads to reducing their carbon footprint and enhancing their sustainability.
To wit, Samsung Electronics has been lauded with the prestigious 2022 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards for their efforts into converting discarded fishing nets into components for Samsung Galaxy series phones.
At present, 640,000 tons of fishing equipment are tossed into the sea every year, many of it dangerous fishing nets that can entangle and kill sea life and damage coral reefs. What is worse is that they don’t degrade over time and maintain their lethal potential for years if not decades to come. To address this, Samsung has incorporated the material used in discarded fishing nets, repurposing them to a greater good in the Galaxy S22 series such as the key bracket and inner S Pen cover without any compromise in quality or performance.
“We are honoured to receive the 2022 SEAL Sustainable Product Award for our efforts to advance more circular product designs and by doing more with less when it comes to ocean plastic waste,” said Sungsun Park, EVP and Head of Mechanical R&D Team of MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung is committed to continuing our sustainability journey and unleashing the company’s scale, innovation and spirit of open collaboration to deliver even more tangible climate actions.”
What is the 2022 SEAL Business Sustainability Award
The 2022 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards are presided over by a panel of sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) experts with every award honouring organisations that create purpose-built products that change the world in a better way.
At present, this is just one facet of Samsung’s extensive efforts towards positive climate actions across its global business operations and product lifecycles as part of their Galaxy for the Planet initiative. The end goal being to eliminate single-use plastics in mobile packaging, achieve zero standby power consumption in all smartphone chargers and diver all waste from landfills by 2025.
