Where most brands are attempting to cram in ever larger displays into their phones and hacking out a notch just to fit in the obligatory selfie cameras or whatnot Oppo have gone for an entirely unorthodox approach with their new Find X phone that is being officially announced in Paris today.  While the official reveal is hours away, The Verge revealed aspects of the Find X’s design and specifications.

Up front, the Oppo Find X has a massive 6.4-inch curved AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution that has a massive screen-to-body ratio of 93.8%. The astute will wonder how they’ve managed to cram a display that large into the chassis since there’s nary a notch in sight nor is there anything resembling a front, or for the matter, back camera on the whole thing. The finish itself at first blush consists of all glass and curves, lending it a posh look befitting a flagship phone.

Rather than besmirching the massive display with such a thing as plebeian notches, Oppo has instead gone and integrated a motorised pop-up mechanism that rises up on demand in just 0.5 seconds to reveal a front-facing 25-MP selfie camera with a 3D facial recognition system along with a rear dual camera array (16-MP + 20-MP).

The phone also eschews a fingerprint reader. Instead, you have to pop up the camera array so it can scan your mug to unlock your phone. It’s certainly an interesting idea, to have a motorised slide-up camera to give the phone a slimmer, cleaner look though it’s not the first time that this idea has been implemented before as Vivo’s Nex phone also features a similar if significantly smaller pop-up camera array.

Under the hood, the Find X sports some top-end hardware that matches its looks. It runs Android Oreo 8.1 overlaid with Oppo’s Color OS 5.1 on a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, comes with up to 8GB RAM and sports up to 256GB of storage. Keeping it juiced is a 3,730mAh battery that integrates Oppo’s VOOC fast charging tech via a USB Type-C port. Unfortunately, the phone lacks a 3.5mm audio jack.

There’s no word on pricing yet but the Find X is destined to be available in China first. There’s is also no official mention yet on whether the phone will make an appearance in Malaysia or at what price but we’ll keep you posted.
