Toyota announces foray into eSports with Toyota Velocity Esports Championship
While we’ve heard of plenty of smartphone and notebook manufacturers making their mark in eSports, this is the first time that we’ve seen a Malaysian car company getting involved which is what Toyota is doing with their upcoming Toyota Velocity Esports Championship.
The Toyota Velocity Esports Championship will take place from 21 to 23 December at the Blue Atrium in Sunway Pyramid mall and will be the biggest virtual racing event in Malaysia with slots for up to 400 Malaysians. Entry is free. The game, you ask? Gran Turismo Sport with participants specifically racing the nimble Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept on the legendary Suzuka Japan GT racetrack.
The best driver wins a whopping RM20,000 in prize money with the first runner up scoring RM10,000 and the second runner up winning RM5,000. There will also be an exhibition race by named worthies from the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) festival to liven things up at the competition.
“At Toyota, we always have our youth in mind. The Esports is on a steep upward curve and has the potential to become one of the top five sports in the world. This rapidly-rising industry is a new and exciting experience especially for the younger generation and with that being said, we at Toyota would like to be at the forefront of this Championship Series,” said Mr. Ravindran K., President of UMWT
