Here’s our Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case review where we see if it’s worth the money…
Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case Review – Build and Design
Table of Contents
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is a unique phablet design as it not only has a large form factor, it also features a stylus well in its lower right side for its integrated S Pen stylus. These two features make manufacturing a casing for Samsung’s largest phone a challenge but Supcase has managed to create a surprisingly effective design.
On paper, the Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case is rated for MIL STD 810G grade drop protection which means it should easily survive a waist high drop to the floor without any damage. While it isn’t water resistant, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is already rated for IP68 water and dust protection.
Our Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case review sample is essentially a transparent bumper case with clear front and rear panels with the transparent rear panel allowing for an unimpeded view of the Galaxy S22 Utra’s backplate.
The front transparent protective panel that covers the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s touchscreen removes the need to install a screen protector and significantly mitigates the risk of scratches. On paper, the front panel has a special cutout made of a different material to ensure unimpeded access to the in-display fingerprint reader for biometric authentication. Another critical feature is that it allows for smooth use of the built-in S Pen stylus on the display itself.
The sides of the Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case are done up in TPU with a black finish complemented by grey trim and have a slightly grippy texture about them for better tactility. Of note here are the gently rounded edges that make gripping the phone an easier task though it adds to the width of the phone somewhat.
If black and grey doesn’t quite suit your tastes, the Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case can also be acquired in a teal shade of Seafoam, a bright reddish Metallic Red and a purple Burgundy. More astute readers will note that these colours correspond to the main colourways available for the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
On closer inspection, the top and bottom are form-fitted to the exact dimensions of the Galaxy S22 Ultra including its side-mounted power button and volume rocker. Located on the base of the chassis is a cutout for both the USB-C port, speaker grille and the S Pen stylus well.
Overall build quality for our Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case review sample feels sturdy at first blush though the transparent panels do look and feel somewhat plasticky which is an unfortunately side effect of its materials but does not impact its functionality.
Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case Review – Performance
Assembling our Supcase Galaxy S22 Ultra Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper Case review sample is a relatively simple task as the front and rear panels easily snap into each other to form a secure protective case around the Galaxy S 22 Ultra.
The front transparent panel is designed to adhere slightly to the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s touchscreen though care has to be taken to ensure that it is absolutely clean and dust free.
Fortunately we had a microfibre cloth on hand but if you don’t own one, you’ll likely need to get one beforehand to ensure a trouble-free installation as even a single mote of dust looks obvious when sandwiched between the case and the display. Once fully assembled, the case fits snugly like a glove and there wasn’t any input lag for the front display while showing off the original casing colours of the phone.
The various ports were easily accessible including the S Pen stylus port though the USB-C port is slightly harder to access than usual due to the thickness of the case which means that some USB-C cables may not necessarily fit; fortunately our UGreen and official Samsung cables had no issues.
Of note is the slightly raised lip across the rear of the camera housing that ensures that the camera lenses don’t get scratched when the phone is placed face down. The rear case also allows for wireless charging without issues.
Seeing Murphy’s Law, the opportunity to test the Unicorn Beetle Edge Bumper case’s durability came soon enough and it managed to survive a waist-high drop to a concrete floor without issues. While the adding thickness and width made it slightly harder to put in a pocket, it offers added peace of mind.
