Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV Review (75-inch) – Big, Bold and Beautiful 4K Flagship Beauty

When it comes to TVs, bigger is always better though this also usually means a commensurately higher price tag with some competing TVs costing as much as a suburban sedan in Malaysia. While larger yet cheaper TVs do exist, they also typically use more affordable technologies and compromise on contrast with subpar colours.

Sharp’s new AQUOS TRU GN7000 series TVs are a new contender in Malaysia, featuring large Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) LED panels and a host of their latest tech at prices that don’t cost an arm and a leg. 

Following its recent Malaysia debut, we managed to get a chance to field test the largest model they have in the range. Here’s our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review for their mammoth 75-inch TV and our thoughts on if this huge telly is worth your money.

Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review – Build and Design

The Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TVs come in three different sizes in Malaysia though they are all aesthetically and functionally similar as they all use an FALD LED panel albeit in different sizes with the range coming with identical ports and similar aesthetics the smallest model being 55-inches and the largest being 75-inches and the Goldilocks size being 65-inches.

Our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review unit is the largest of the lot, spanning 75-inches diagonal. To their credit, the TV has a sleek minimalist design with exceptionally thin top and side bezels and is relatively flat at 88mm thin with a tiny chin jutting out from the bottom that hosts a brace of sensors and a mic to allow for voice commands via Google TV. This section also features sensors for Dolby Vision IQ to optimise screen colour and contrast based on ambient light levels around the TV.

Mounting options consist of a pair of Y-shaped feet if you’re looking for a freestanding option and the usual VESA mount on the back if you’re looking for a wall-mounted solution. The TV also ships with a remote control that also has direct shortcuts to Netflix, YouTube and the usual array of streaming services along with support for voice commands.

As TV designs go, our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review sample looks sleek and suitably minimalist which lets it fit seamlessly into almost any home decor setup.

 

Port placement is primarily clustered towards the rear of the TV with the array of I/O consisting of a wired Ethernet port, a digital audio out, a pair of HDMI 2.1 ports and a solo HDMI port with eARC/ARC for hooking up a soundbar or console, a pair of USB2.0 ports for plugging in peripherals or a flash drive, an antenna-in port and an AV-in port.

This setup covers the bases including plugging in a console and soundbar as well as a set of peripherals too. One quibble here though is that the USB-A ports are tightly clustered together which means some versions with a chunky external case will find it a hard fit.  

On the acoustic front, the TRU GN7000 TV has a pair of downward firing 15W speakers for a collective 30W to handle 2.0 stereo sound with support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital+ and Dolby Audio for richer sound and a wider soundstage. Here’s how the AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV stacks up on paper…

Setup is relatively straightforward though you’ll need to hook it up to your home WiFi and login to your Google account to obtain full functionality, especially access to voice commands which takes a few minutes but the benefits are well worth the trouble. 

 

Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review – FALD Deep Chroma 4K LED display explained  

While Sharp’s top of the line AQUOS XLED TVs take pride of place as the most sophisticated and powerful out of their line-up for 2024, the Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV series is just below it in terms of its capabilities with a more finely tuned blend of value and performance that makes it a potent contender in its own right.

Our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review sample is the largest variant available at 75-inches and like its 65-inch and 55-inch siblings, uses a Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) panel which has a 120Hz refresh rate that makes it ideal for watching action and sports movies as well as AMD FreeSync Premium which prevents tearing when playing games on it and features support for HDR10 content though at present, it doesn’t support HDR10+ content. 

For the uninitiated, a FALD backlit LED panel is capable of better contrast ratios with more precise dimming of LED backlit arrays than a non-FALD backlit LED model which ensures better looking content especially for HDR footage. Of note is the integration of what Sharp refers to as the X6 Revelation Processor that ensures that footage looks sharper and runs smoother onscreen.

The TV also integrates Sharp’s own Deep Chroma Display technology that uses a Chroma enhanced backlight that has pure green and pure red phosphors for purer colour rendition overlaid with an anti-glare surface to mitigate reflections. Sharp’s Deep Chroma Display technology overlays the display itself and is officially capable of expressing over 1 billion colours while offering up Sharp’s BT.2020 colour gamut which to effectively offer richer and more lifelike colour rendition.

The addition of Dolby IQ tech also enables the TV itself to intelligently adjust brightness and colour settings for optimum viewing based on an ambient light sensor located in the aforementioned chin area at the base of the display so that movies don’t look washed out when watching in the daytime and aren’t like a spotlight staring in your face with stark contrast if you watch it at night.

Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review – Performance

When subjected to test footage on default settings, our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review unit did not disappoint, with the TV able to serve up vibrant hues and excellent colour rendition, with deep blacks and excellent whites along with minimal blooming in test 4K footage on stock settings though you’ll likely need to tweak it to taste.

While not as precise nor as able to offer extreme contrast as the mini LEDs in the top of the line Sharp AQUOS XLED GU8500 range, the AQUOS TRU GN7000 acquits itself admirably and punches above its price point. 

In fast moving scenes like the final battle in the recent Dune 2 movie where the Fremen storm the Emperor’s palace, the display was able to keep details crisp and smooth while keeping aspects of the scene’s challenging mono colour palette of browns, blacks and reds – it’s a desert planet after all – looking lively and detailed. 

In several BlackPink music videos, the AQUOS TRU GN7000 managed to serve up lively colours while keeping the movements of the quartet looking smooth and detailed. The TV was also able to handle intense hues like the neon pinks and greens with a restrained hand without it looking overly oversaturated and looking pleasantly lifelike with good skin tone rendition in Squid Games.

Gamers will particularly appreciate the charms of the AQUOS TRU GN7000 as its 120Hz refresh rate with VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) along with AMD Freesync Premium ensures that games played on the TV will remain judder free and smooth. It’s not just consoles as it’s a dab hand for PC gaming too – if you’re looking to experience Cyberpunk 2077 or Black Myth Wukong writ large on a massive 75-inch display, this is the way to do it.

The provision of Dolby Vision IQ means that the AQUOS TRU GN7000 doesn’t need to be plonked in a completely dark room to look its best and it is able to dynamically adjust its settings based on ambient light to ensure best viewing results every time which means that it’s ideal for any living room, especially in Malaysia’s temperamental sunny weather.

While it looks modest on paper, the combined 30W speakers are surprisingly good with the ability to kick out excellent volume without distortion when cranked to maximum and also able to offer a good amount of detail even in busy tracks and movies if you have compatible Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital+ content.

Getting about and navigating through the various menus of our Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV review unit is a relatively simple task especially for those used to an Android phone interface with shortcuts to all the usual content streaming favourites like Apple TV, Netflix, Prime, YouTube and the like baked into the menus for easy access. The provision of voice commands in Google TV also makes searching for content, making simple queries and controlling settings a doddle short of you having to press the remote. 

Should you buy the Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV?

The Sharp AQUOS TRU GN7000 TV is a delightful blend of performance and value, capable of tackling movies, sports and gaming while serving up great colour rendition, contrast and detail at a modest price.

The provision of Google TV also makes access and navigation a seamless affair. This is a well-rounded, reasonably priced flagship TV that is worthy of consideration especially for what you pay for.
