amaran Go Review – Build and Design
Table of Contents
While smartphone cameras have advanced by leaps and bounds, they still lack the space or power to integrate sufficiently strong lighting systems—especially for video recording. This is where the new amaran Go pocket LED video light comes into play.
Best known for their professional-grade video lighting setups, amaran has designed the amaran Go as a small, highly portable lighting option for smartphone videography. While many options exist, most are bulky and rely on large clips that may not fit all phones or work efficiently.
In contrast, our amaran Go review unit is a sleek, elegant device featuring a MagSafe-compatible magnet on its underside, allowing it to attach seamlessly to recent Apple iPhones. Even better, amaran includes a circular MagSafe adapter sticker, making it compatible with non-MagSafe phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 series. The package also includes a USB-C cable for charging.
The amaran Go features a square-shaped housing with a built-in battery and an L-shaped external hinge that extends up to 180 degrees. This allows the LED light to be positioned above the backplate of a phone for better lighting when using the front camera. Alternatively, it can remain folded when using the phone’s rear cameras.
Another standout feature is the built-in LED-backlit mirror. When flipped open, this mirror enables users to touch up their makeup on the go or record talking-head videos using their phone’s rear camera. However, using this feature means the main LED light array must be folded out of the way.
What sets the amaran Go LED video light apart is its customisable controls. Users can adjust the color temperature from 2,700K to 6,500K and fine-tune brightness with 10 adjustable levels. Additionally, the light integrates with the free amaran app for iOS and Android, providing more precise control over settings and lighting effects.
On paper, the amaran Go offers up to 8 hours and 50 minutes of battery life and charges via a USB-C port at its base, simplifying logistics. In terms of build quality, our amaran Go review unit feels sturdy and surprisingly weighty, despite being mostly polycarbonate.
The hinge mechanism is firm, ensuring the LED light stays in place. In Malaysia, it is available in white, green, pink, grey, and matte black—the color of our review sample.
amaran Go Review – Setup and Performance
Setting up our amaran Go review unit was straightforward. It charges via USB-C and easily attaches to the back of MagSafe-compatible iPhones like the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Once attached to the iPhone 13 Pro Max, downloading the amaran app was quick and easy. The app immediately recognized our amaran Go unit, unlocking additional features unavailable through physical buttons alone. While the light can be adjusted manually via the physical controls, the app offers more precise settings and extra functionality.
Within the amaran app, users can fine-tune the color temperature from 3,200K (warm) to 6,500K (cool, daylight-like) and adjust brightness from 0% to 100%.
Unlike most camera lights, amaran goes a step further by including various lighting effects that can be activated via the app, adding creative flexibility for videographers. With a single tap, the light can simulate:
- Strobe flashes (like paparazzi cameras)
- Fireworks effects
- Flickering bulbs
- Lightning strikes
- TV screen glow
- Explosion lighting
- Fire-like warmth
In real-world testing, our amaran Go review unit proved a powerful and versatile video light for capturing video. Its adjustable color temperature and brightness levels allowed us to fine-tune lighting for different scenarios.
The built-in mirror was useful for quick touch-ups, and the ability to flip the light forward or backward made adding extra lighting to either the front or rear cameras a cinch. It was also able to fit onto a Galaxy S25 Ultra via the use of the provided Magsafe adaptor sticker.
However, the amaran Go is most effective at close range. Its maximum brightness is best suited for subjects within one meter, making it ideal for selfie videos, talking-head content, and vlogging. The soft LED lighting also makes it flattering for human subjects.
For those frequently filming in dim environments, this compact and effective lighting solution eliminates the need to hold a separate light or rely on an assistant.
Battery life depends on brightness settings. At minimum brightness, it lasts up to 8 hours and 50 minutes, while maximum brightness reduces runtime to around one hour—still sufficient for short videos or TikTok content. The fact that it’s pocket sized also makes it practical to carry around all day long too which is a substantial bonus especially for content creators on the go.
