Asus ROG Strix XG17 240Hz portable gaming monitor showcased at Computex 2019
Gaming aficionados are pretty picky with their choice of monitors and there’s plenty to meet demand but there’s a dearth of panels that are both man-portable enough yet powerful enough to tackle competition-grade gaming. Until now that is as Asus’ Republic of Gamers brand has unveiled the Asus ROG Strix XG17, the world’s first portable gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate.
If you’re one of the many out there who game professionally or are passionate enough about the sport to kit yourself out with the hardware to do it justice, you’ll likely be pushing some hefty frame rates beyond what the average sedate desktop user would need.
If your pixel crunching hardware and display aren’t up to the mark, you’ll encounter the unpleasant spectre of choppy frame rates and screen tearing haunting your gameplay. The Asus ROG Strix XG17 tackles that handily as it is capable of offering up to a whopping 240Hz refresh rate on its 17.3-inch Full HD display while adaptive-sync tech lets it optimise the frame rates onscreen for whatever content you’re playing from 48Hz all the way to its maximum 240Hz.
Externally, the ROG Strix XG17 is a surprisingly svelte affair that has a fold out panel at the base to deploy it at an angle and folds down flat enough for you to tote it alongside your gaming laptop. Other mod-cons include stereo speakers and a built-in battery that offers up to three hours of battery life when going in at a 240Hz full tilt refresh rate. ASUS has also stated that they will be selling an attachment that lets you perch the Strix XG17 up on top of a laptop display for a dual-stacked screen setup; There is no word yet on price or launch dates but If this is the future of portable gaming, then it’s a bright one indeed.
