Garmin’s Descent Mk1 dive computer delves to new depths

Garmin is best known as a solid go-to brand for GPS devices though they’re now plumbing the depths, literally so, as they’re debuting their first watch-shaped dive computer dubbed the Garmin Descent Mk1 in Malaysia.

For the uninitiated, dive computers aren’t there for divers to check out Facebook in the briny deep. Instead, it has a more practical function as it helps to calculate dive tables and, in the case of the Descent Mk1, help to plan almost every aspect of their dive including entry and exit points via GPS. That’s pretty important seeing as you only have a limited tank of air to work with underwater.

Externally, the Descent Mk1 is hewn of stainless steel with a silicone watch band for a secure fit while the 1.2-inch LED backlit display is paved with a scratchproof sapphire lens. All this renders the watch diveproof up to 100 meters while offering 40 hours of battery life in dive mode and an impressive 19 days in watch mode.

Crammed into the Descent Mk1 is a GPS with GLONASS satellite tracking for surface navigation, a built-in altimeter, a barometer and a compass for activity tracking duties for not just diving but for running, hiking, biking, rowing and other land-based fitness activities too. If worn over bare skin, the watch is even able to effectively track your heart rate. When paired with a smartphone, you can also use the watch to take and view emails, texts and notifications. Like many other smartwatches, you’re also able to add new apps and swap watch faces via Garmin’s Connect IQ app store.

The Garmin Descent Mk1 will retail for RM4,599 and will be launched in collaboration with RAID (booth #201 and #202) at the Malaysia Dive Expo at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur which will take place from May 4 – 6.
