What is flyaway hair

Try as we might, flyaway hair is a common occurrence for men and women alike that can otherwise mess up a perfectly coiffed hairdo. Flyaway hair is the result of a multitude of potential factors ranging from a dry climate to new hair growth or even the build up of too much hair damage. All this results in the creation of more friction and static electricity between hair and the end result -annoying flyaway hair.

What is the Dyson Supersonic Flyaway attachment

The new Dyson Supersonic Flyaway attachment looks a bit like a quaint looking flat curved pipe sorts but it’s not merely for show as it harnesses the Coanda effect, something that its sibling the Dyson Airwrap takes advantage of, to help achieve a smooth salon style finish and tackling flyaway hair.

The attachment mimics the blow dry and brush method that professional hair stylists use by leveraging the aforementioned Coanda effect to attract and lift longer hair to the attachment while a secondary jet flow of air gently tucks in flyaways into the hair locks to create the classic smooth salon style finish that we all know and desire. It’s an uncanny sight when put into action and achieving what would have typically taken months of apprenticeship under a skilled hair stylist into a compact achievement is an impressive feat indeed.

Our engineers are driven to rethink convention and  our obsession with airflow led us to push the potential of Coanda after observing how stylists use a ‘brush and  blow dryer’ technique to smooth flyaways. Traditionally, this skilled technique involves the stylist using a round  brush to section and manage the hair, whilst directing airflow from the dryer to push the flyaways into the style  and out of sight. We set out to find a way to innovate a way to mechanise this method for the everyday styler. The new Dyson Flyaway Attachment harnesses the phenomenon of Coanda to smooth flyaways out of sight,  without exposing the hair to extreme heat damage,” said Emma Sheldon, Dyson Hair Care Category Director.

Part of the magic of the Dyson Supersonic is achieved via its powerful V9 digital motor that spins at 110,000rpm even as an Intelligent Heat Control sensor dynamically monitors air temperature 40 times a second to ensure the air doesn’t get too hot to cause heat damage to hair and their patented Air Multiplier tech triples the air flow thrice to create a high velocity jet of air to make it one of the most powerful hair dryers of its kind in the market.
