The new Xperia XZ2 is Sony’s best looking phone ever
Sony Mobile is trying a different tack this time around with their latest Xperia XZ2 phone that debuted alongside its smaller sibling the XZ2 Compact at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona.
Rather than the flat, squared off top and bottom that was iconic of older Xperia designs, the new Xperia XZ2 has a more contemporary look and feel in keeping with many of its competing compatriots that they’ve dubbed as ‘ambient flow’: figure in gently rounded corners, a curved ergonomic backplate and a taller 2:1 aspect ratio 5.7-inch Full HD+ display though they still have enough space for them to tack on their logo on the slimmed bezels. Rather than the side mounted home button cum fingerprint reader, the XZ2 has it mounted on the rear just beneath the single lens camera and it still retains a dedicated shutter release for the camera. The entire phone is also IP68 water resistant so it is rated to survive a splash or two.
One particularly unusual addition to the phone is the inclusion of haptic feedback along with stereo speakers so you can get some tactile kick when watching movies and gaming. To ensure both audio and visuals are up to snuff, the Xperia XZ2’s display is HDR ready for lusciously vivid visuals in addition to Hi-Res audio support for lossless audio. Unfortunately, the phone lacks a headphone jack. The rest of the hardware is consists of a top-shelf Snapdragon 845 processor running Android Oreo, 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage while a 3,180mAh battery keeps things powered.
On the imaging front, it packs a 19-MP camera akin to last year’s XZ Premium phone that is capable of 960fps motion capture in 1080P along with 4K HDR movie video recording capabilities. The XZ2 is slated to appear in four colours – Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink with global release dates set for March and pricing to follow.
Xperia XZ2 Compact
The smaller sized sibling of the XZ2 is essentially the same phone in a smaller form factor with the same Snapdragon 845 processor, same front and rear camera and hardware though it trades in a few features for its smaller size.
The XZ2 Compact comes with a smaller 5-inch HDR Full HD+ display, ditches the haptic feedback Dynamic Vibration System and also has a smaller 2,870mAh battery. The XZ2 Compact will ship in four colours – White Silver, Black, Moss Green and Coral Pink with similar release dates to the larger Xperia XZ2.
