OPPO R17 Pro camphone now up for preorders at RM2,699
OPPO Malaysia has hinted and teased about the OPPO R17 Pro and its impressive low light image capture capabilities but this evening’s launch has laid bare everything there is to know about the phone.
The OPPO R17 Pro’s main claim to fame is its rear dual camera array that comes with a primary 12-MP camera that has a mechanical aperture that lets it swap between F/1.5 to F/2.4 as needed depending on ambient light conditions much like a human iris along with OIS. This setup is somewhat akin to the Galaxy S9 that debuted earlier this year. Paired with this is a 20-MP F/2.6 camera. There is also a third depth-sensing module to take 3D imagery dubbed a Time of Flight (TOF) sensor.
It isn’t solely a hardware based solution as OPPO has included a number of software embellishments to the R17 Pro, in particular their AI Ultra-Clear Engine to ensure better low light snaps. They also have an ‘Ultra Night Mode’ that takes several seconds to capture a shot but which yields pleasingly lit results even under low light. Up front, the phone has a 25-MP F/2.0 selfie camera to create creamy background blur.
Taking pride of place is a 6.4-inch FHD+ rpanel sheathed in Corning Gorilla Glass 6 with a tiny teardrop notch up top to ensure that it has a large 91.5% screen-to-body ratio. Rather than the traditional fingerprint reader, the OPPO R17 Pro has an under-glass fingerprint reader to unlock the phone. The rest of the hardware consists of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octacore processor running Android 8.1 overlaid with their ColorOS 5.2 user interface paired up with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage.
To keep the R17 Pro powered, it has 3,700mAh of available power, split evenly between two 1,850mAh batteries with SuperVOOC flash charging tech to juice it from zero to full in under 35 minutes though it lacks a wireless charging option.
Other concessions include the lack of water resistance, an audio jack and expandable memory but the phone’s impressive imaging capabilities look set to put these minor quibbles as mere afterthoughts.
At launch, OPPO announced that the OPPO R17 Pro will retail at RM2,699 which puts it just below flagship phones and slightly above midrange workhorses though it’s imaging capabilities are clearly in the company of the former. Colour options include Radiant Mist and a more limited issue Radiant Green and the phone is up for preorders with early birds getting a free Neo Smartband wearable worth RM389.
