From a brand that few have heard of from China to what is now the world’s fourth largest in global market share, OPPO is certainly making waves globally. Their recent array of camera-centric phones such as the selfie-oriented F1s launched at the tail end of last year and their recently launched new R9s that has a rear 16-MP with an F/1.7 aperture are feeding a market hungry for solidly specced yet affordable phones.

According to IDC, OPPO experienced a 133% year-on-year growth globally and accounted for 6.8% of the world smartphone market in 2016 with 99.4 million phones shipped last year in total. This is almost double their figures in 2015 where they shipped 42.7 million phones and had 3% of global market share. That’s a lot of phones.

OPPO also released some interesting titbits of data about the performance of their phones worldwide. According to research firm Gfk, their F1s phone seems to have resonated with the hordes of selfie-mad millenials in India and helped them hit a 10.9% sales unit share in the India offline market in December 2016 which is an improvement of 1.2% from the same period in time in 2015. In China, their earlier R9 phone, the predecessor to the R9s, was the best-selling device in China for the entirety of 2016 based on data acquired by Counterpoint Research.

OPPO’s global presence has expanded as well with them recently launching the R9s in Australia along with them expanding their presence with new branches in Saudi Arabia, North Africa, the Middle East and Kazakhstan and New Zealand.

“In 2016, our strategy was to stay simple and focused – putting out premium-quality products with phenomenal cameras,” said Sky Li, OPPO VP and Managing Director of International Mobile Business. “The success we saw is because of our commitment to listening to our users and bringing them devices tailor-made for their lifestyles. We’ll redouble that commitment as we continue our global expansion this year.”
