Red Hat hosts sixth annual forum in Kuala Lumpur
Running for six concurrent years, the Red Hat Forum showcases the best ideas in open source innovation and the enterprise space. The annual circuit covers a dozen cities across the globe and this time around, Malaysia was sixth in the circuit just after Red Hat concluded their proceedings in Tokyo the day before and which begun at Mumbai, India earlier this year.
In Kuala Lumpur, the Red Hat Forum continued the discussion initiated at the inaugural Red Hat Summit in June, in San Francisco under the theme “Power of Participation” which opened up the debate on how enterprises can transform and innovate by learning, networking and collaborating via open source technologies. Key topics that saw ardent discussion included means to enabling digital transformation, Linux containers and software-defined storage.
“Open source acts as a viable alternative for companies in Malaysia. The apt analogy to open source would be to liken it as water in a river. It’s essentially free but if you are going to use it for something mission critical like drinking water, you’ll need to invest in the processes to make it drinkable which in the context of open source would be within the confines of a General Public License (GPL). You don’t necessarily have to buy Evian or Perrier but you don’t need to pay a premium for something that works. ,” says Damien Wong, Vice President and General Manager, ASEAN, Red Hat.
Invited partners and guests, several of which were from the public sector, financial services and the telecommunications industry, took the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the use of Red Hat and its ecosystem of technology partners in business. The event also saw a showcase of success stories from Red Hat Innovation Awards APAC 2016 as well as expositions by subject-matter experts on the latest product innovations for attendees.
