Samsung Galaxy AI will be empowering their next generation phones – here’s what you need to know

There’s no escaping the fact that AI is most exciting development in tech of late with the advent of large language model (LLM) AIs capable of offering cogent answers to all manner of queries like ChatGPT and the flurry of other AIs in the market.

Samsung is looking to take things up a notch as they are going to implement an on-device AI in their next generation of smartphones, hopefully as early as the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, that they’ve dubbed as Galaxy AI that makes their phones more powerful and more effective than ever before.

What is Samsung Galaxy AI?

Samsung released a statement that shared more about their Galaxy AI initiative in broad strokes. According to Samsung, ‘Galaxy AI is universal intelligence on your phone as you’ve never seen it before. In all the places it matters most — from barrier-free communication, to simplified productivity, to unconstrained creativity — we’re unleashing new possibilities’.

So far, it’s broad strokes at the moment but Galaxy AI will feature on-device AI from Samsung and cloud-enabled AI from ‘like-minded industry leaders’. Its capabilities and feature set hasn’t been fully elaborated on yet but one of the features is an AI Live Translate Call that acts as a baked-in personal translator for both audio and text translations in real-time that uses on-device AI to ensure privacy.

“Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity and more for people around the world, but until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” said Wonjoon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business. “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.” 

A hint as to its launch date is also mentioned – ‘Coming early next year, Galaxy AI will bring us closer to a world where some of the most common barriers to social connection dissolve, and communication is easier and more productive than ever.’ Bar these official statements, details on Galaxy AI remain scarce.
