Samsung Galaxy Ring First Look – First Impressions of their sleek Smart Ring for Malaysia

Originally announced at Galaxy Unpacked 2024 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6, the Galaxy Ring was launched in other regions like the United States and Korea. Now, it is officially coming to Malaysia and we had an opportunity to get a closer look at a special preview ahead of its official launch. Here’s our Samsung Galaxy Ring first look where we share our first impressions of their first ever smart ring for Malaysia in more ways than one.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Ring?

In essence, the Samsung Galaxy Ring is a smart ring made of titanium that you can wear on either your index or third finger that can track your step count, track your heart rate in real time, assess stress level and also offer sleep tracking and an overall Energy score of your overall well being based. The ring itself also has automatic walking and run tracking along with the ability to send alerts if it detects an abnormal heart rate.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is rated for 10 ATM immersion in water and IP68 dust and water resistance and has a built-in 70mAh battery that offers about a week of battery life before needing a recharge from its charging case. When paired with a Galaxy series phone, it can also offer gesture controls, allowing users to dismiss phone alarms or to take a video or photo with just a pinch gesture.

Samsung Galaxy Ring first look – how does it look and feel up close?

The Samsung Galaxy Ring comes in three colours – Titanium Silver, Titanium Gold and a shade of matte Titanium black and has multiple different sizes with the smallest being size 5 all the way to size 15 which is about 10 available sizes to choose from. 

inspection, the Galaxy Ring itself is fairly slim with a 2.6mm thickness with the inner portion studded with sensors and the outer portion featuring a single raised notch on the outer bart to indicate where it is supposed to be oriented face down when worn. Barring the notch, the ring itself is just a smooth band of Grade 5 Titanium. 

Getting the best experience is contingent on an optimum fit and my rather chunky index finger veered between a size 11 to size 12 though the latter offered a better fit without being overly tight. Another interesting feature to note is that the charging cases that house the rings are not universal nor interchangeable and each one is designed to fit a specific size of Galaxy Ring. The base of the case houses a USB-C port for charging. 

When worn on my index finger using a size 12 band, the Samsung Galaxy Ring proved to be surprisingly comfortable to wear. For those who find wearing a watch to sleep uncomfortable, the Galaxy Ring looks like  the perfect smart wearable to wear for sleep  tracking.

As you’d likely surmise, you’ll need a paired smartphone to derive any actionable data from the Galaxy Ring and the free Samsung Health app. While most of the health and fitness tracking readouts are available and work with most Android phones, the pinch gestures to control camera shutter release with the Galaxy Ring are exclusive only to Samsung Galaxy series phones. Samsung Galaxy Ring Malaysia price and availability

In the briefing, Samsung stated that customers in Malaysia can buy a sizing kit first out of pocket before buying the Galaxy Ring itself if you’re going through the purely online route.

The preferred method would be to drop by a Samsung Experience Store where you can test the in-store sizing kit for free before purchasing it. It’s not an immediate off-the-shelf purchase though and it has a 5-week wait to be ordered in due to the sheer number of possible combinations of colourways and ring sizes available.
