New upgraded Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 packs better main cameras, bigger battery and more

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 took the stage alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 at Galaxy Unpacked Paris 2024 and has more significant upgrades compared to its predecessor with the new design getting a slightly larger cover display, a bigger battery and more capable cameras on top of a flagship grade processor.

What’s new with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 retains the same basic flip-phone form factor including a chassis of approximately similar thickness made with second generation Armor Aluminum and retains a similarly sized 3.4-inch Super AMOLED 60Hz front cover display with 720 x 748 pixels resolution protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 which also protects the backplate.

Closer inspection also reveals an improved, sturdier and slimmer Dual Rail hinge design that allows the phone to be essentially gapless when folded down while having a slimmer hinge. It also enjoys w an upgraded IP48 dust and water resistance rating, allowing the phone to resist dust ingress and survive 1.5 metres of fresh water for 30 minutes.

This time around, Samsung has bumped up the main dual camera array to a 50MP F/1.8 sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus and OIS equal in performance to the main cmaera used in the Galaxy S23 paired with a secondary 12MP F/2.2 ultra wide angle camera.

 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 camera

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Fold6 have more prominent camera rings with the Flip6 having colour matched camera rings whereas the Fold6 is all consistently black regardless of the colour of the finish

Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold6 that has dedicated cameras on the rear, front cover display and main folding display, the nature of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6’s design is that the main dual camera array can be used for almost all photographic and imaging scenarios including selfies – a fact that Samsung has empowered by enabling the front-facing cover display to act as a viewfinder for selfies, makes it a truly well-thought out and practical design feature

The phone also sports a larger 4,000mAh battery that’s 300mAh larger than its predecessor in the Flip5 with 25W wired charging. The phone also offers 15W wireless charging too along with reverse wireless charging.

Unfurling open the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 reveals a similarly sized 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex X2 display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a small punch hole with a 10MP F/2.2 camera for video calls and selfies. In this aspect, the new Galaxy Z Flip6 retains identical cover and main display sizes, display quality and the same 10MP selfie camera as its predecessor.

Like the Galaxy Z Fold6, the Galaxy Z Flip6 is powered by the flagship-grade Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor, currently Qualcomm’s best mobile chipset.

Under the hood, the phone runs the latest Android 14 with their own OneUI 6.1 along with a guaranteed 7 years of OS and security updates. Of note is that the Galaxy Z Flip6 also includes a vapour chamber, the first Flip-class foldable to do so which ensures better sustained performance under heavy workloads.

The Galaxy Z Flip6 also enjoys the same improved Galaxy AI updates as the Fold6 with enhanced Live Translation that allows one user to view the cover display for a written translation with another viewing the main screen. While it isn’t a huge feature, Samsung has finally added a digital zoom slider when using the phone in camcorder mode. that’s within reach of your thumb for smoother zooms.

On top of the flagship-grade processor, and improved cameras the phone also enjoys another significant upgrade – more RAM with the new model packing 12GB; its predecessor only had 8GB RAM. Storage options consist of either 256GB or 512GB of storage. The RAM is also complemented by OneUI’s ability to add up to 8GB of RAM Plus virtual RAM off the onboard storage though this can be dialled down to as low as 2GB in the settings based on user preference.
