Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 takes the stage with slimmer design and powerful camera upgrades
Taking centre stage at the latest Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is a more refined design compared to its predecessor the Galaxy Z Fold3.
Intended more for power users, the new Galaxy Z Fold4 features a somewhat similar chassis with the same port and button place but has a whole slew of enhancements under the hood. For those seeking a more mainstream design, Samsung also released a revamped version of the Flip3 dubbed the Galaxy Z Flip4. Here’s how the Galaxy Z Fold4 stacks up…

What’s new with the Galaxy Z Fold4
Table of Contents
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 has a similar form factor to its predecessor with a side-mounted volume rocker and power button which also has a fingerprint reader though the slimmer, reengineered hinge design makes it slightly sleeker than its predecessor on top of being lighter too at 263g; which is 8g shaved off the older Fold3.
Beyond aesthetics, the new Galaxy Z Fold4 has wider aspect ratios for the primary and folding main displays, the customary updates to hardware and, most important of all, much better cameras with the new foldable feature the same triple camera array as the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus which is a powerful setup in its own right with excellent low light capabilities dwarfed only by the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
It also retains the same robust IPX8 water resistance as well as the use of their Armor Aluminum on their chassis for added durability in addition to Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the backplate and display much like the Fold3 but also uses an enhanced version of their Ultra Thin Glass on on the main folding AMOLED display for added resistance to nicks and better compatibility with the SPen stylus.
Fortunately, the current SPen Pro stylus existing in the market for the Fold3 is compatible with the new Fold4 but Samsung is issuing it in new colourways that match the Fold4’s paint jobs. Unfortunately, there is no stylus well in the Galaxy Z Fold4 but you get the option to acquire a casing which has an external slot to store the S Pen stylus.
Up front, you get a 6.2-inch HD+ (2,316 x 904 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X Cover display with a 120Hz refresh rate that’s similar to its predecessor though with thinner bezels for a slightly wider aspect ratio.
The main folding display consists of a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate and an inner 4MP under display camera that’s almost invisible to the naked eye. Flanking the main folding display are stereo speakers akin to its predecessor. The Cover screen also has a wider 23.1:9 aspect ratio over the Fold3’s 24.5:9
The aspect ratio for the Galaxy Z Fold4’s main folding display is more obvious on account of the slimmer top and side bezels with a wider 21.6:18 aspect ratio versus the older and taller 22.5:18 ratio in the Fold3. Another update with the new Galaxy Z Fold4’s main folding display is enhanced durability and it’s rated for over 200,000 opening and folding sequences which is almost double that of its predecessor.
In terms of hardware, Samsung has kitted out the Galaxy Z Fold4 with the best currently in market with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor running the latest Android 12L under the hood overlaid with their OneUI 4.1.1 user interface and 5G connectivity as standard. This is paired with 12GB RAM and either 256GB, 512GB or a whopping 1TB of non-expandable storage.
The rear camera array is vertically aligned like its predecessor but has significant upgrades across the board from its predecessor by implementing the same hardware as the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus.
The primary camera features a more powerful 50MP sensor with OIS, a secondary 12MP ultra wide angle camera and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The front outer selfie camera on the cover display has a single 10MP sensor.
Keeping the phone powered are two separate batteries split across both halves of the chassis that collectively offer 4,400mAh of battery life with the option of 25W fast charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging for other devices. Unfortunately, like its predecessor, Samsung won’t be shipping a charger in the box and you’ll have to source one on your own.
On top of the improved design and updates to hardware, the new Galaxy Z Fold4 also has a revamped user interface with a taskbar at the bottom akin to Windows for easier app swapping rather than the current system of swiping in the edge bar from the side.
The Galaxy Z Fold4 will be available in three storage configurations with your choice of a 256GB model, a 512GB variant and an online-exclusive 1TB with four possible colourways with your choice of the ever popular Phantom Black , a greyish Gray Green paint job and a shade of Beige which resembles a clean white with gold accents. There is also an online exclusive deep red Burgundy colour which is only available on the Samsung online store.
