Samsung lights up lives of Kampung Ulu Tual villagers with Love & Care programme
The lives of the impoverished villagers at Kampung Ulu Tual in Kuala Lipis, Pahang were changed for the better when Samsung Malaysia Electronics in collaboration with the Industry Relationship Division under the Ministry of Higher Education took the opportunity to create a brighter future by helping to improve their infrastructure.
Consisting of some 140 houses, the village of Kampung Ulu Tual lacked two critical utilities in the form of light and clean water. The lack of electricity means villagers have to halt many activities by sundown; this impacts the education of the youth of the village as they are often forced to study by candlelight. The lack of clean potable water also impacts the health of the community.
To that end, Samsung Malaysia donated 300 Solar LED lights towards the community so as to maximise and do more things regardless of the time of day in order to better their lives . Each LED light is compact, highly portable and charges via built-in solar panels to offer at least 8 to 12 hours of light. Teams of engineers were also deployed to install a solar automated self-cleaning mobile filtration system developed by the University of Malaya to provide water for the entire community. Samsung also donated tablets equipped with education software as well as offering the time and expertise of volunteers from the company to improve the educational prospects and stimulate a love for learning with the youth of the community.
This inititative to give back to the community follows on from a tradition of responsible corporate citizenship. In 2015 and 2016, Samsung also took the opportunity to aid the villagers by donating solar panels, educational materials and lights that became a source of inspiration for the community. “We are back again this year to continue what we started to create positive change for people in need and help them live better lives – one that is full of possibilities,” said Dato’ Roh Jae Yeol, Corporate Affairs Director of Samsung Malalysia Electronics.
