Shopee shares why awesome Malaysians support local sellers with #ShopeeSapotLokal
The current state of affairs is tough on everyone but Malaysians in the spirit of solidarity are supporting their fellow countrymen by prioritising local sellers in their purchasing decisions online according to an online brief with the theme #ShopeeSapotLokal shared by shopping giant Shopee ahead of Merdeka Day and the upcoming grand Shopee 9.9 sale that will traditionally be celebrated in grand fashion with bargains galore.

The online brief with an overarching theme of #ShopeeSapotLokal shared that 60% of Malaysian consumers are proactively supporting local sellers. In a census, 3,356 consumers were asked ‘Why do you think it is important to support local sellers?’ and the response was heart-warming indeed as 20% wanted to keep the economy running for patriotic reasons, 8% supported other local sellers in the same boat and 42% preferred shopping locally for faster delivery.
Out of the total of 3,356 respondents who are Malaysian buyers, 54% are working full time, 18% are in-between jobs, 17% are senior citizens, 6% are stay-at-home parents and 5% are university students.
In the census, 70% of those polled shared that shopping online consistently resulted in 5% savings with 50% of buyers needing to reduce expenses , 14% not earning enough to cover essentials, 10% foreseeing major expenses in the coming months and 6% providing for multiple dependents.
“Interestingly, not all buyers prioritise discounts and vouchers exclusively. Seven in 10 Malaysians value peace of mind over lower price,” according to Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia.
“When Malaysian consumers express their values through online shopping preferences this way, we truly understand why eight in 10 local sellers started their selling journey online with Shopee. We are humbled to discover that half of our local sellers surveyed say the income earned on our platform is crucial as it enables them to support their families,” said Soh.
Also polled were 3,132 Malaysian sellers. In terms of engagement of online sellers opening up shop on the Shopee platform, 24% state that it is their only source of income, 5% are not able to get a job, 18% need to supplement their income and 24% feel the pressures of higher cost of living while 30% said that they had a passion for business.
