Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium and XA1 Ultra land in Malaysia for RM3,399 and RM1,899
Sony’s uber Xperia XZ Premium phone that made its global debut at MWC 2017 earlier this year is finally making an official appearance in Malaysia. The Xperia XZ Premium is the most powerful thing that Sony has crafted so far and won a slew of awards and plaudits at MWC.
Externally, the phone retains their Loop aesthetics which involved a flattened top and bottom with rounded edges though this time around the XZ Premium has a mirrored metal finish and chamfering around the edges that makes it look exceptionally posh indeed. The icing on the cake is that the whole affair comes with IP65/68 water resistance along with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back to provide some survivability from nicks and scratches.
In terms of hardware, the XZ Premium tops almost everything else currently in the field as it notably packs a 5.5-inch 4K HDR display for viewing HDR content with an impressive 807ppi that is also beefed up with Sony’s usual slew of imaging tech including their Triluminos and X-Reality engine for better colours and detail.
Paired with this is a current-gen 64-bit Snapdragon 835 processor which combines eight Kryo processors, four of them run at 2.45GHz and the remainder at 1.9GHz along with an Adreno 540 GPU and up to LTE Cat 6 support for nippier downloads. This is paired with Android Nougat 7.0 under the hood with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable memory via a hybrid SIM card slot.
The rear camera has a 19-MP sensor with an 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS mobile sensor, large 1.22um pixels and their BIONZ image processing engine and 5-axis optical image stabilisation to capture snaps and 4K video. Like the Xperia XZs, the XZ Premium has Sony’s Motion Eye sensor for 960fps ultra slow motion video.
The XZ Premium’s front camera has a 13-MP sensor, their Exmor RS for mobile image sensor, an F/2.0 aperture and 5-axis optical image stabilisation too. The phone also has a 3,230mAh battery with Qnovo Adaptive Charging tech and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 for fast top-ups in the field. The XZ Premium comes in three colours – a silvery Luminous Chrome and a dark Deepsea Black for RM3,399 with a Bronze Pink coming in later on.
Xperia XA1 Ultra
Also launched was the more affordable Xperia XA1 Ultra that sports a 6-inch 1080P display, a MediaTek Helio P20 64-bit 2.3GHz octacore processor running Android Nougat 7.0, 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable memory.
The rear 23-MP camera has their Exmor RS for mobile image sensor and an F/2.0 aperture while the front camera has a 16-MP sensor along with a similar Exmor RS for mobile image sensor and optical image stabilisation for selfies and a smart selfie flash.
The phone uses a 2,700mAh battery to keep things ticking along and has MediaTek Pump Express Plus 2.0 for fast charging and their Qnovo Adaptive Charging tech. It ships in gold, white, black and pink for RM1,899.
