Starcraft 2 goes free to play this November
Real time strategy gaming has been on a depressing decline in recent years in terms of popularity but Blizzard’s latest announcement at Blizzon 2017 may just reverse that trend as they’ve announced that a good chunk of Starcraft II is now free to play.
The sequel to the original Starcraft, Starcraft II is split into three individually sold, fully featured single player campaigns that feature a particular race starting with the Terrans in Wings of Liberty, the Zerg in heart of the Swarm and the Protoss in Legacy of the Void. Each campaign also lets you play the other races in multiplayer mode.
Starting from November 14, anyone can download and play the first full campaign dubbed Wings of Liberty that features the Terrans for free though the other two races are fully playable in multiplayer mode with all the new units and balance updates including ranked multplayer mode from the latest Legacy of the Void expansion. Also available for free is Starcraft 2’s Co-op mode along with three fully unlocked Co-op commanders – Jim Raynor, Kerrigan and Artanis – while the rest are playable until Level 5 experience. There’s also a new Co-op commander that actually consists of Starcraft II’s oddest couple ever and we don’t mean Jim Raynor and Kerrigan. Instead, you get to play as staid Matt Horner and eccentric mercenary Mira Han who have both gotten hitched and combine Dominion air power and fast moving merc kamikaze units into a lethal combination on the virtual battlefield.
For those who already own Wings of Liberty as of October 31, 2017, they’ll get Heart of the Swarm for free by logging onto Battle.Net between November 8 and December 8 2017. Those who already own any version of Starcraft 2 prior to 21 October 2017 will get three free portraits and an Eidolon Ghost skin.
Those who have already purchased a Starcraft II campaign will gain immediate access to the ranked ladder while free players will need to have 10 first wins of the day in Unraked or Versus AI to qualify.
