Xiaomi officially launches Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in Malaysia
Xiaomi’s array of smartphones have always epitomised affordability and performance. Their latest offerings, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus aim to do that and more. Both new phones have officially been launched in Malaysia and bring some exceptional features that include full screen displays – the feature du jour – for smartphones today.
The Redmi 5 has a 7.7mm thin metal casing and sports a 5.7-inch, 18:9 aspect ratio HD+ display up front. It runs Android Nougat out of the box on a Snapdragon 450 1.8GHz octacore and pairs this with 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. The rear camera comes with a 12-MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and large 1.25 μm for better low light sensitivity while the front has a 5-MP camera. Both front and rear cameras are capable of 1080p video capture. The Redmi 5 comes in your choice of black, gold and blue.
The Redmi 5 Plus is a larger, more capable phone all around. While it weighs more at 180g, versus the Redmi 5’s lighter 157g carry weight, it also has much better hardware. For starters, it comes with a 5.99-inch 18:9 aspect ration FHD+ display at 2,160 x 1080 pixel resolution, a midrange Snapdragon 625 processor and 3GB RAM with 32GB RAM of expandable storage. The camera setup is similar to the Redmi 5 with a 12-MP f/2.2 single rear camera with PDAF and 1.25 μm along with a front 5-MP camera.
The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are available for purchase at DirectD and can also be acquired at authorised Mi Stores nationwide as well as their official store on Lazada.
DirectD and Lazada are retailing the Redmi 5 Plus with 3GB RAM/32GB storage at RM749. A 4GB RAM/64GB exists but is not coming to Malaysia just yet.
The Redmi 5 with 3GB RAM/32GB storage retails for RM699 at DirectD though it’s slightly cheaper on the Xiaomi Lazada online store at RM679. A Redmi 5 variant with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage also exists for those on a more modest budget that retails at RM599 though it is only available in gold from DirectD.
