Ugreen is the de facto mainstay of savvy tech users looking for reliable cables and chargers and their gear is a cornerstone of our office and for remote work setups. We managed to get our hands on their latest Ugreen 100W GaN 2-port fast charger for review and took it for a whirl in the office, on our daily commute and for a few jaunts overseas. Here’s our Ugreen 100W GaN fast charger review where we share if this compact charger is worth your money.
Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger Review – Build and Design
Table of Contents
An improved and more compact variant of the earlier Ugreen 100W GaN fast charger that debuted in 2021 with a smaller form factor with the trade-off of having less ports, our Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger review sample is able to output an equally powerful 100W of charging power via two USB-C ports and hosts a UK-style plug in the back compatible with local Malaysian wall outlets. Different variants also exist with US and EU-style plugs for various regions.
In Malaysia, a variant of the 100W GaN Fast Charger exists with four charging ports, three of which are USB-C and one of which is a USB-A port. While similar in weight and design, the pricier 4-port variant (RM219) is better suited for power users (pun notwithstanding) who need to charge multiple lesser items though the 100W charge is distributed among all four ports if you aim to use all of them simultaneously which means it charges everything hooked up to it a bit slower.
Our Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger review sample may only have two ports but each port is able to offer 50W of power if both are used at the same time and up to 100W if you stick to just one port. Not only is the 2-port version cheaper at RM179, it’s also a more pragmatic setup as the majority of people typically carry, at most, a phone and a laptop or tablet around for work or lectures.
In terms of build quality, our Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger review unit is somewhat of a chonker at 215g and rather thick too though it feels extremely sturdy and well built. The whole affair is done up in Ugreen’s signature dark gunmetal grey paint job which resists fingerprints nicely. Even after being tossed around in our backpack for several weeks with regular use, the finish has remained resistant to nicks and scratches.
Perhaps the only quibble here is the fact that its UK-style plug used here isn’t able to fold flat, which adds quite a bit to the charger’s length and leaves a set of pointy bits that can potentially poke you when you tote it around in your backpack. Users who prioritise mobility can opt for the more compact UGreen 65W foldable charger though it isn’t as powerful as the 100W charger that we have in for review.
Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger Review – Performance
On paper, our Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger review unit features their latest implementation of gallium nitride (GaN) tech that ensures stable temperatures and charging speeds without affecting performance. It also has a slew of safety features including built-in circuitry that safely redistributes the charge when you add or remove devices from both ports as well as ensuring it doesn’t overheat or short circuit.
According to the official specifications, our Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger review unit supports the usual array of fast charging protocols including Power Delivery 3.0 and 2.0 standards, PPS, Quick Charge 4+ and Apple fast charging, offering up to 100W power if using one port and 50W per port if you use both.
This allows it to charge the vast majority of non-gaming USB-C powered laptops from all major manufacturers like Asus, Acer, MSI, Dell Huawei and more in the market, almost all current generation USB-C powered smartphones including the new Apple iPhone 15 series and all but the most exotic smartphones with proprietary charging tech. On paper, the charger is able to fully charge an Apple MacBook Pro 16 in just under 2 hours.
Using just one port, it was able to rapidly charge a Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022 laptop which typically requires a chunky 90W USB-C charger in a comparably swift fashion as its original charger in an hour or so.
It was also able to offer super fast charging protocol support to a Galaxy Z Fold4 and Fold5, both of which support 25W fast wired charging with a full charge in about an hour and 20 minutes or so. We also tested charging up a Huawei P60 Pro and it managed to kick in its standard quick charging mode via USB power delivery though it wasn’t able to trigger Huawei’s 88W Super Charging mode which remains a proprietary standard that is only used on its own in-house charger and cable.
When both ports are used simultaneously, it managed to charge both the aforementioned MateBook X Pro 2022 and a Galaxy Z Fold4. While the Fold4 charged in a normal time frame, the laptop was a wee bit slower though the fact that the charger can handle the power draw of both charging at the same time is still quite a feat and it’s still faster than the prior UGreen 65W foldable charger we tested while being more versatile too.
Should you buy the Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger?
The compact size and performance offered by the Ugreen 100W GaN Fast Charger make it an effective addition to anyone who has to rapidly charge multiple devices. While it lacks foldable prongs and is a bit on the chonky side, it’s nevertheless smaller than competing chargers while remaining equally effective and relatively portable. The 2-port version is more than sufficient for most users though those with even more items to charge will appreciate the 4-port variant.
