Oppo Reno12 series – Reno12 and Reno12 Pro launched in Malaysia; prices start from RM2,199

Oppo has just announced the launch of their two latest AI phones which feature significant AI enhancements dubbed the Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro in Malaysia. Taking center stage for both phones are an array of AI-powered embellishments. Here’s how both the Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro stack up in terms of specifications as well as the new AI features that OPPO has included in both devices.

Oppo Reno 12 and Reno12 Pro – AI features

As the successors to the Oppo Reno11 series launched earlier this year, both Reno12 series phones in the Oppo Reno12 series come with an array of AI-powered enhancements, with several centred around enhancing image quality from the rear cameras. 

For the cameras, the Oppo Reno12 series can use an AI Eraser 2.0 that can more intelligently remove photo bombers in shots, an AI Clear Face that can beautify not one but multiple subjects in a group shot while ensuring faces are captured with clarity and – surprisingly- has the ability to correct those who accidentally closed their eyes in a photo to ensure everyone has their peepers open. 

Another AI feature is AI Smart Image Matting 2.0 where you can intelligently save objects or people as stickers and then add them in another photo which has a host creative applications.

The phones also have an AI Studio that can creatively reimagine photos with generative AI to create different looks ranging from something straight out of a Harry Potter movie to something suitably corporate from a single photo. 

Both the Oppo Reno 12 and Oppo Reno12 Pro also have an AI Toolbox built on Google Gemini’s LLM. Part of the AI Toolbox is an AI Recording Summary that is smart enough to identify the context of articles to generate summaries and even write content based on a prompt. Other sundry AI-powered updates include AI Voice which ensures clear vocals on both sides of the call.

Oppo Reno12 and Reno12 Pro Malaysia specifications and price

As the more powerful of the two, the new Oppo Reno12 Pro has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution at 2,412 x 1080 pixels as  well as a 120Hz refresh rate protected by tough Gorilla Glass Victus 2 that is flanked by a pair of stereo speakers.

Under the hood, the Oppo Reno12 Pro hosts a Mediatek Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset built on a 4nm process paired with 12GB RAM and 512GB of expandable storage via a microSD card.  Of note with the Oppo Reno12 series is that both phones have an IP65 rating which allows for dust and water resistance for up to 30 minutes in 1 metre of freshwater. 

The rear comes with a 50MP F/1.8 primary camera with optical image stabilisation, a 50MP F/2.0 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom as well as an 8MP/2.2 ultrawide angle camera. Up front, it has a 50MP F./2.0 camera for selfies which can capture up to 4K video. Keeping the Oppo Reno12 Pro powered is a 5,000mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging and reverse wireless charging.

Slightly lower down the totem pole is the mainstream Oppo Reno 12 that has an identical 6.7-inch 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display though it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7. The processor is identical to the Reno12 Pro, with the phone running on the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy processor paired with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage that also has a microSD card slot for additional storage. It also has a similar 5,000mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging.

The camera setup also differs slightly though it has a similar 50MP F/1.8 primary camera with OIS. Where it differs is that it has a smaller 8MP F/2.2 ultrawide angle camera with no optical zoom as well as a 2MP macro camera. The front selfie camera is also slightly smaller with a 32MP sensor.

Additional features with the Oppo Reno12 series that veer more towards hardware include a new BeaconLink mode which enables Oppo Reno12 series phones to call each other in the fashion of a walkie talkie as well as a LinkBoost feature that helps in rapidly reacquiring phone signal in challenging areas such as lifts or car parks.

In terms of pricing, the Oppo Reno12 is priced at RM2,199 for the 12GB RAM/512GB storage variant in your choice of Nebula Silver and Astro Silver while the Oppo Reno12 Pro is priced at RM2,599 for the 12GB RAM/512GB storage model in your choice of either Matte Brown and Astro Silver.
