Huawei enters the VR fray with a new VR headset
While Huawei has made inroads in challenging the dominance of the existing industry heavyweights with an array of premium phones like their recently announced P9 and the P9 Plus, they still lacked a vital piece of the puzzle: virtual reality consumption devices. Now, they’ve just revealed the missing piece of their device strategy and it’s the Huawei VR that they announced in Shanghai today.
The Huawei VR has a form factor akin to the Samsung Gear VR with a strap-on headset and a chunky forward facing array done up in white. A focus ring is perched on top while the right side is host to a back button and touchpad. The Huawei VR works with the new P9 and P9 Plus and relies on a USB Type C port for charging and docking duties.
Like Samsung’s Gear VR, you pop your Huawei phone with the display facing inwards before a pair of clamps holds it securely. You then pop the translucent protective cover back on and you’re on the way to enjoying VR content. When it launches, the Huawei VR will have over 4,000 free movies, over 40 free games, over 350 panoramic images and 150 panoramic tours to enjoy. That should keep you occupied for quite awhile.
There’s no announcement of price or launch date but if it will likely see deployment in China first before other regions. We’ll keep you posted.
