TM Roh shares transformative Essential, Innovative and Harmonious Design philosophy of upcoming products launching at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023 in Korea
The next Galaxy Unpacked 2023 that will take place in Korea will happen next week and all eyes are set on Samsung as they will unveil their next generation of foldables to the world which are widely expected to be the successors to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 along with a slew of as yet unrevealed products.
Rather than going for a pure arms race of simple iterative hardware updates, Samsung is looking at the long game to offer products that are not only class-leading but transformational in nature for its users
In an address ahead of Galaxy Unpacked 2023, TM Roh, Samsung Head of MX Business who is also now helming Samsung’s Corporate Design Center shared how his experiences as an engineer and new additional role has helped him to gain a greater understanding of how design, engineering and R&D can create transformative experiences when applied towards the rich array of products that Samsung makes.
From home appliances to the latest phones including the array of foldables that will arrive at Unpacked 2023 in Korea, TM Roh shared that Samsung’s philosophy of ‘Inspired by Humans, Creating the Future’ has infused its products since it was conceived in 1996 with an emphasis on user-centric design that saw the launch of their venerable SCH-100 which was their first CDMA phone with an integrated antenna – this was huge news back in the day.
Some three decades later as Samsung is set to unveil their fifth generation of foldables to the world, TM Roh emphasises the importance of user experiences and how it can be distilled into three broad Design Identities that every Samsung product, including what will be revealed at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 must fulfil in their design which is Essential Design, Innovative Design and Harmonious Design.
This refinement of their original design philosophy into their tripartite approach of Essential, Innovative and Harmonious Design now underscores and further emphasises Samsung’s lead in innovation.
“Users value experiences over mere achievements and meaningful connections over raw technological prowess. We have distilled the Samsung design philosophy into three Design Identities, each one with you at the centre: our products must be Essential, Innovative, and Harmonious,” said TM Roh.
What is Samsung’s Essential, Innovative and Harmonious Design philosophy?
According to TM Roh, the three Design Identities are combined create a synergistic effect greater than the sum of their parts and which acts as the magic sauce of Samsung’s cutting edge designs especially what will be appearing at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 in Korea.
Innovative Design emphasises originality that reflects purpose in new and distinct ways while Harmonious Design ensures all elements work together for a holistic purpose that are aligned with societal, environmental and ethical values. Last but not least, Essential Design prioritises clarity of purposes and ease of daily use.
He further elaborates on how these Design Identities are infused into each Samsung product.” These three Design Identities are exemplified by our latest hardware and software ecosystem. Take, for instance, the act of folding and unfolding a smartphone. It seems simple. However, that simplicity users feel is only achieved through a rigorous focus on what is most essential and intuitive. The minimal, sleek appearance housing specialised hinge functionality emphasises our commitment and the inherent beauty of essential design,” says TM Roh.
As a tantalising hint as to what will be appearing at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, he adds, ”We’ve raised the standards for foldable smartphone ergonomics. A difference of millimetres in a device’s thickness may not sound like a big change, but every gram and millimetre in a foldable device requires an engineering breakthrough. It demands craftsmanship with passion. When done well, the benefit to users is huge. That’s why we’ve innovated to make our latest foldables slimmer and lighter than our previous generations.” This infers that the chassis of the successors to last year’s Fold4 and Flip4 are, at the very least, lighter and slimmer than their predecessors.
Another interesting breadcrumb is that Samsung won’t be launching just foldables at Galaxy Unpacked 2023, there would likely be new wearables and a tablet too. “Samsung Galaxy Tab and Wearables are designed in the same spirit. They work with each other harmoniously in an ecosystem that opens up a powerful connected experience, serving as a seamless extension of your needs, priorities and unique personality,” says TM Roh.
His address wraps up with an invitation to watch the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 live stream when it happens this 26th July 2023 at 7.00PM Malaysia time.
“When design comes together with technological innovation, it brings forth new possibilities. With innovative technologies, people can make the most of today and ultimately create the best possible tomorrow. We invite you to join us at Unpacked, where we’ll pull back the curtain on our latest devices and experiences — inspired by you, created for you.” concluded TM Roh.
