New Apple iPhone SE 2020 heralds the age of the sub-RM2,000 iPhone
For most users, the very mention of Apple’s iPhone smartphones evokes eye-watering, wallet demolishing prices paired with the sort of desirability that you’d typically associate with a designer hand bag but their latest refreshed iPhone SE is offered at prices atypical for gear from Cupertino with the lowest model retailing from RM1,999. That’s pretty darned good for iPhone-grade pricing.
The iPhone SE almost looks like an anachronism in today’s age of under-display fingerprint readers and triple and even quad cameras, what with its single rear camera and – get this – an actual physical home button. But, it has an IP67 rating for water resistance and is surprisingly wieldable one-handed; no surprise there as it bears an uncanny resemblance to an iPhone 8.
It’s classic form also means familiarity for a veritable army of users who have yet to hop onto the latest generation iPhones. Plus, there’s some old warhorses too who just miss having a physical home button like yours truly. In terms of colour choices, it comes in either black, white or red.
While the new iPhone SE does bear a spitting resemblance to the iPhone 8, it’s a different beast altogether under the hood as it’s powered by the A13 Bionic processor, the same chip in the iPhone 11 Pro so it should similarly nippy speed and battery life along with WiFi 6 support.
The rest of the hardware is somewhat akin to the iPhone 8 with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with True Tone while the rear packs a 12-MP F/1.8 single camera that relies on the ISP and Neural Engine of the A13 Bionic CPU for Apple’s popular portrait lighting modes as well as 4K video capture. The front spots a 7-MP F/2.2 selfie camera that’s also capable of using Apple’s vaunted portrait lighting modes.
According to Apple, the iPhone SE has about similar battery life to the iPhone 8 with about 13 hours of video playback.
