Magic the Gathering Aetherdrift prerelease races into Malaysia

Magic the Gathering typically explores a variety of themes with their expansion sets including collaborations with other franchises like the Fallout, Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40K series but their new Aetherdrift expansion takes things in a new direction as it involves a unique racing theme with a multiversal twist.

What is Magic the Gathering Aetherdrift

In the Magic the Gathering Aetherdrift set, players are thrust into the Ghirapur Grand Prix with the prize being the eponymous Aetherspark. Seeing the racing-related theme, Aetherdrift involves a new Max Speed mechanic where players track their speed level and will gain speed points when enemy players lose life until reaching Max Speed status which triggers a number of effects. You can also get one-off Exhaust effects to trigger at the right moment and your choice of a variety of Mounts or Vehicles to win.

The set will offer new card treatments and collectibles including serialised Aetherspark cards of which there are only 500 spread across all regions in Collector boosters. You also get first-place box toppers in Aetherdrift Play Booster Display and Collector Booster Display sets which will have one rare or mythic rare card with gold foil treatment and a one full-art basic land. You also get borderless graffiti giant cards in Play and Collector boosters. Collectors boosters will also feature race-themed Japanese artwork in foil and fracture treatments too. 

To prepare for the event the Southeast Asia Wizards Play network (WPN) stores are kicking things up a notch with Aetherdrift prerelease events from 6 February to 30 April where players can win physical prizes with an official release date of 14 February 2025. Eligible events include draft, standard, commander and more with players who participate being able to earn campaign pins, posters, race tags and a custom speed/life counter.

The first 3 players to finish th  in-store Race to Victory tracking card by 23 March 2025 will also be eligible to qualify for the Race to Victory country championships and from there on up stand the chance to score the Aetherspark trophy with five trophies up for grabs, one each for Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.
