Rather than radical changes, Samsung has opted for subtle refinements to their overall design with aesthetics culled from their Galaxy Watch Ultra that consists of a rounded display inset into s squarish casing that they’ve dubbed as the Distinctive Cushion Design. More pedestrian users refer to this as a squircle.

The successor to last year’s Galaxy Watch7 series, the new Samsung Galaxy Watch8 series is 11% thinner than the prior Galaxy Watch7 series thanks to implementing a single-sided PCB to save on internal space. The new Galaxy Watch8 series also sports a revamped, better fitting dynamic lug system to offer a more comfortable fit. The chassis features 5ATM water resistance, effectively making it swimproof while featuring IP68 dust and water resistance as well as a MIL-STD-810H rating.

Comfort and aesthetics aside, the Galaxy Watch8 comes in a 44mm model with a 1.47-inch display and a 40mm model with a 1.34-inch display with both variants using a Super AMOLED Always-On touch panel. Refinements to the displays now offer 50% better brightness as well as up to 3,000 nits peak brightness for better clarity under sunlight.

Additional upgrades include an upgunned BioActive Sensor for better accuracy and new features. The new Galaxy Watch8 series also has a new Antioxidant Index that gets you a measurement of your carotenoid levels in 5 seconds, the first smartwatch to do so, enabling you to get an idea of how well you’re aging.

Another new feature is a Vascular Load metric that shows how much stress your cardiovascular system is under as well as improved sleep tracking with 3-day sleep analysis and better sleep coaching. There’s also a High Stress Alert that gives you a warning sign if you need a break.

Another key upgrade is better endurance, with a battery that’s 8% larger on both Galaxy Watch8 variants with the 44mm variant getting a 435mAh battery while the smaller 40mm version gets a 325mAh battery.

What hasn’t changed though is that the Galaxy Watch8 series still runs on last year’s Exynos W1000 5-core chip paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB of storage that’s running the latest Wear OS 6 overlaid with Samsung’s One UI 8 Watch interface and are the first smartwatches to feature Google Gemini straight out of the box as well as Samsung’s own Now Bar.
