The latest Samsung phones will get 4 years Android updates and 5 years of security updates
Samsung is taking the lead with their phones and they’ve just set a high bar indeed for product support for their fleet of devices with longer durations for security updates Android updates for their most recent phones such as the new Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Tab S8 tablets and more.
In their latest press release, Samsung stated that they will offer 4 generations of Android updates and 5 years of security updates for their most recent Galaxy S series, Galaxy Z series foldables and Galaxy A series mid range phones as well as their latest Galaxy Tab S8 series slates.
Not only that, Samsung is also offering updates for their smart watches too with 4 years of updates to One UI Watch and Wear OS Powered by Samsung firmware for their latest Galaxy series watches.
This is way ahead of the existing competition in the Android phone market with competitors usually maxing out with 3 generations of Android updates and 4 years of security patches while Google’s Pixel phones tap out at 3 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates. To be fair, Apple still leads the race when it comes to product support with many of their older devices capable of being updated to their latest iOS 15.
This effectively means way more value for users who invest in Samsung gear of recent vintage as it’ll last longer, stay safer longer because of the security updates and get updated features for 4 years so the Galaxy S22 series phone you buy with Android 12 today will last all the way to Android 16.
What Samsung tablets and Samsung phones will get 4 years Android updates and 5 years of security updates?
The commitment to these generous security updates comprise of the following which, in general includes the latest phones and foldables starting from those released last year and moving onwards for future Galaxy S series, Galaxy Z series and Galaxy A series and Galaxy Tab series devices.

For smart wearables, Samsung is so far committed to supporting the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic with their 4 years of One UI Watch and Wear OS Powered by Samsung updates.
This commitment to updates is impressive indeed but there’s a few caveats of course as these updates typically aren’t universal as a device update may be governed by other factors including requirements by a telco for compatibility, by region and other minutiae. There’s also the official caveat that ‘Availability and timing of One UI upgrades and features may vary by device model and timing of Android OS upgrades’
What about Samsung devices not on the update list?
But what happens to devices that aren’t on the list? They’re still covered after a fashion as Samsung has committed to supporting up to 3 generations of Android updates, one less which is still above par by industry standards for their older generation phones that precede the Galaxy S21 series.
