The world’s fastest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy CPU is powering Samsung’s latest Galaxy S23 flagship
To power their latest flagship smartphone, Samsung has commissioned a custom version of Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile processor dubbed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy that makes Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series smartphones one of the most powerful phones in the market in terms of sheer performance, among its other salient attributes like larger batteries and better cameras.
In the current pantheon of Qualcomm processors, the mainstream Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the most powerful standard issue mobile processor in their line-up that a smartphone manufacturer can cram into a phone. The customised Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor takes the existing power and performance of the stock chip and dials it up to 11.
What is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor?
At its heart, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor is exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and sees service on the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphones.
The new chipset is based off the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 but enjoys a tweaked higher-clock speed with the Prime CPU core running at 3.36GHz while the Adreno 740 GPU runs at 719MHz. A stock Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Prime Core runs at a slower 3.2GHz while the Adreno 740 runs at a slower 680MHz. This makes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy take the proverbial Iron Throne as the world’s most powerful Snapdragon processor in current service.
Typically, chip manufacturers try to achieve a balance of power efficiency and performance in mobile processors. On paper, higher clock speeds also means more heat which leads to performance throttling to manage the temperature spike. In the case of the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung has addressed the higher performance envelope of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset by adding larger vapour chambers to the entire family of phones.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra features a 2.1x larger vapour chamber than its predecessor the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the Galaxy S23+ has a 2.7x larger vapour chamber than the Galaxy S22+ and the Galaxy S23 has a 1.7x larger vapour chamber than the Galaxy S22.
These vapour improvements vary of course because of the differing sizes of the phones and the dimensions of their predecessor’s vapour chambers and how much extra vapour chamber space that Samsung’s engineers could add to each design.
This combination of enhanced performance and cooling means that the new processor powering Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series is rated for 34% faster CPU performance, 49% faster NPU performance and 41% faster CPU performance as revealed at their Galaxy Unpacked 2023 live stream.
That’s not all as Samsung has also issued fast LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage to the entire Galaxy S23 series for faster read and write speeds. Combined, this results in a noticeable performance increase across the board with faster app loading and swapping, richer gaming experiences and generally smoother performance across the board.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy enhancements for the Samsung Galaxy S23 series
The faster Adreno 740 GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy also has several subtle yet powerful refinements that include support for the latest Vulkan API version 1.3 for better graphics performance, support for the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans Framework for more realistic depictions of people in games as well as a Snapdragon Game Post Processing Accelerator that offers enhanced in-game effects like motion blur, bloom and depth of field in supported games.
Not only is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset a force to be reckoned with for gaming, Samsung has worked closely with Qualcomm closely to take image capture capabilities to new heights. To wit, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is the world’s first smartphone to use Snapdragon’s Cognitive ISP that leverages AI and machine learning to enable real-time Semantic Segmentation to intelligently process subjects and backgrounds in a given image for better results.
The new Samsung-exclusive chipset also enables the rear cameras of the Galaxy S23 series to capture up to 8K@30fps video (up from 8K@24fps from last year’s Galaxy 22) video with the ability to also create smoother Super Steady videos in QHD resolution versus the Galaxy S22’s Super Steady videos which were capped at 1080P. Connectivity on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy in the Galaxy S23 series is top notch as well with fast WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and 5G connectivity across the board.
