Epson CO-FH02 Review – Portable and bright budget smart projector for homes and offices

Large displays remain an appealing choice be it for gaming, productivity or just simply enjoying a season or two of your favourite drama as it makes everything more immersive.

However, the challenges of modern living – especially if you’re living in a rental or small apartment where space is at a premium – make it a less than ideal option, to say nothing of the price tag. This is where portable smart projectors like the Epson CO-FH02 fill the gap and remain a popular choice.

While it isn’t the latest projector model in Malaysia, this budget projector from Epson enjoys enduring popularity on account of its ability to kick out up to a massive 391-inch display if you have enough space and a more practical 60-inch one when placed in a normal home living room while being compact enough to move around on your own without the need for a forklift.

We managed to get a unit for testing and after an extensive movie and Netflix marathon with some paperwork thrown in, here’s our Epson CO-FH02 review where we share if this portable smart projector is worth your money.

Epson CO-FH02 Review – Build and Design

On paper, the Epson CO-FH02 is a modestly priced midrange smart portable projector that is intended for use in both home and office scenarios.

The projector is relatively portable at 2.6kg while having a footprint with the thickness and dimensions of a stack of a dozen fashion magazines. This means that it is still a bit too large to shove into a backpack but is compact enough to be manportable for short distances around the office or home. It is also relatively compact enough to easily toss into a car boot for an offsite movie marathon or presentation.

Aesthetically speaking, the Epson CO-FH02 sports a clean off-white finish that lends itself a rather minimalist corporate look. The front of the projector hosts the lens housing and the lens itself though it lacks a protective shutter to keep it safe during transport so some care needs to be taken when moving it around.

The top portion hosts a power button and lens focus controls along with a grille for the sole upwards-firing 5W speaker. The left side hosts a ventilation grille and a Kensington lock in the off chance you need to keep it secured in a fixed location.

The underside of our Epson CO-FH02 review sample consists of a pair of rubber feet and an adjustable kickstand that allows you to tweak the angle of the projector somewhat.

The left side of the projector is the most unique aspect of the design. While it looks nondescript at first glance, the left side has  a thin slide-out plastic panel that neatly hides the projector’s ports and has a small recess that’s large enough to store the Android TV dongle. Arrayed in a row are an HDMI port, a USB-B port for maintenance and a USB-A port that is intended solely to power the dongle.

Epson has also bundled a short USB-A to micro USB cable as well as a HDMI to HDMI cable that are both intended solely to power and to stream content to the projector from the dongle.

While it keeps things neat and tidy, the panel is a finicky affair that’s hard to open though there’s very little need to do so once you hook up the Android TV dongle to the projector. If you opt to use it like a more traditional projector, things get a bit more complicated as the panel has to be kept open to retain access to the ports.

Epson CO-FH02 Review ports

The rear is otherwise unremarkable except for a DC-IN port to power the projector itself with the cable spanning about a meter which is acceptable though you’ll likely need a cable extension if your plug points are located far apart from where you intended to use it.

Epson CO-FH02 Review – Specifications

On paper, our Epson CO-FH02 review sample is able to throw a Full HD (1,920 x 1080) screen ideally at a 60-inch panel size from 1.58 meters away though it is able to project up to a massive 391-inch panel if you deploy it from 10.4 meters away from a projection surface.

The projector relies on Epson’s proven RGB Liquid Crystal Shutter Projection system that features three LCD chips, with each of the three chips projecting one of the three main colours – red, blue and green – to ensure excellent colour rendition and brightness while mitigating the irksome rainbow effect seen in cheaper single-chip DLP projectors.

In terms of longevity, the lifespan of the lamp in our Epson CO-FH02 review unit is rated for 6,000 hours if you use it in normal mode and double that at 12,000 hours if you opt to use it solely in Eco mode. In theory, if you use it three hours a day for a year in normal mode, the CO-FH02’s lamp is easily able to last six years even without resorting to Eco mode.

What makes the Epson CO-FH02 particularly attractive is that it comes with a bundled Android TV dongle that gives it smart TV capabilities. With Android TV, users can stream content off the usual popular streaming sites like YouTube, Netflix, iQIYI, Prime Video and the like and also have the option to input Google Assistant voice commands.

Epson CO-FH02 Review remotes

Oddly, it ships with two remote controls, one for the Android TV dongle itself and the other to manipulate projector settings though only the Android TV control has a mic to accept voice commands. Here’s how it stacks up on paper:

Epson CO-FH02 Review – Setup and Performance

Getting our Epson CO-FH02 review unit up and running is a simple matter of plug and play with most of the legwork being mostly pointing it at a sufficiently wide whitewashed wall and then adjusting it to taste.

The projector offers keystone correction and also features a built-in height adjustor at the base for a more precise fit. Controlling screen size requires you to move the projector back and forth until you get your preferred size.

After getting the screen size right, it’s simply a matter of sharpening the projected image. There’s no autofocus so you’ll need a bit of fiddling with the lens focus but it’s a relatively easy task and the projector also has digital zoom to further finetune the screen after you’ve dialled it in.

One interesting thing to note and something that they take particular pains to highlight in the user manual is that the projector needs a bit of clearance to its sides and rear for ventilation. After a few minutes of operation, the sides and rear get rather hot but to their credit, temperatures were well managed and remained consistently warm without spiking even after several hours of use.

Key to this are its cooling fans that generate about 42dB of noise and which offer a muted whirr when in operation. It’s quite audible in a quiet room or library but is otherwise inaudible if you’re playing content or the average Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

Once you’ve got the desired screen size and sharpness dialled in, you’re able to tweak the colours to taste with your choice of one of four colour modes – dynamic, vivid, cinema and natural. While it takes ten or so minutes to do all this when you’re a new owner, a practised hand can get this all sorted out and the projector set up in a minute or two especially after you’ve set up your preferred colour settings.

When tested, our Epson CO-FH02 review sample excelled as a portable smart projector to watch streamed movies anywhere around the house or office. The compact dimensions and its bundled Android TV dongle meant that it was easy to move, allowing for movie streaming on almost any flat wall around the house or the office.

Looking to watch the Star Wars trilogy in the garden? Plonk a white sheet on the wall, run an extension cord to the projector, get a couple of chairs and you’re sorted.

Need to catch up on a drama in bed? Plonk it on the nightstand or a dresser, aim it at a wall and you’re able to run through an entire season of K-dramas without even getting out of bed. It would have been nice if it had a mount to aim directly upwards for ceiling projection but it is not a deal breaker.

The projector is understandably not rated for colour accuracy as it’s not intended for content creators but movies and shows served up punchy hues with the Fifth Element’s futuristic vibrant landscapes looking delightful onscreen with good detail  and smoothness.

However, films and shows with substantially more black tones like the Dark Knight Rises don’t fare as well, with the blackest tones such as background shadows looking slightly grayish though gradients are still noticeable like Agent Smith’s black suit in the Matrix Reloaded.

The refresh rate for our Epson CO-FH02 review sample is capped at a modest 60Hz which is fine for everyday use and watching content though this may not be sufficient for serious gaming. For casual gaming, it’s not an issue.

The brightness on offer with the Epson CO-FH02 is exceptional and the projected screen is bright enough in normal mode for comfortable viewing even in a relatively bright living room with partially drawn curtains and indirect sunlight. Out of the offered colour modes, we tended to prefer Natural mode with its more restrained handling of colours and more natural looking skin tones.

The integrated 5W speaker offers good volume and fair sound quality for casual listening for the average living room. It understandably does not have much sound staging or deep bass but it gets the job done and manages to handle Netflix binging and YouTube without issue. However, if you prefer better sound quality, you’ll need to pair the projector up with Bluetooth speakers as the projector lacks audio ports.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest quibbles with our Epson CO-FH02 review sample is also port related – the sole HDMI port on the projector is taken up by the Android TV dongle. To exacerbate matters, the nature of its design makes it challenging to access as you have to constantly remove the panel and then remove the HDMI cable connected to the dongle to gain access to the port.

Alternatively, you can opt to just leave the panel off and then use a third-party HDMI switch so you can use the dongle and connect it to another device like a console or laptop though this detracts from its otherwise clean minimalist look.

Should you buy the Epson CO-FH02 smart portable projector?

The Epson CO-FH02 smart portable projector makes for a capable smart projector that is able to offer a bright, large and crisp 1080p viewing experience along with Android TV support.

However, the limited number of ports does reduce its versatility somewhat though this is only an issue unless you’re using it for productivity related tasks or presentations where you need to access laptops, TVs and other gear. For those who want something portable to watch movies on a huge 60-inch screen anywhere in the house, the Epson CO-FH02 is suited to the task.

While it isn’t the newest smart portable projector on the block or the smallest, its ability to kick out one of the brightest and largest screens at its price point, its robust and enduring design and, best of all, its modest price point, continue to make it a solid choice in 2026.
