Kaspersky shares 6 vital security tips to stay safe when shopping online
Times have changed and people are shopping more than ever online which represents another avenue for cybercriminals and other malicious threat actors to both defraud or gain access to vital information from unsuspecting shoppers.
To discover awareness on security and safety practices when shopping online, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky conducted a study with 3,000 respondents from across the world that include Argentina, Chile, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.
Based on the study, 65% of online shoppers believe they are bright enough to detect fraud on their own while only 42% are pragmatic enough to use security software to protect payments and block malicious links. What’s worse, Kaspersky has identified nearly 6.7 million phishing attacks with 55.6% of them targeting online shoppers.

In a global survey conducted by Kaspersky, the cybersecurity firm showed that 97% of respondents demonstrated a substantial level of awareness of online security risks and implemented at least some, if not all the necessary measures to safeguard their digital transactions.
The survey also found that fewer than half the participants, which are primarily among shoppers aged 55+ and higher, used dedicated security software to block phishing attempts and protect payment transactions though only 32% of respondents in this age group were actually using security software when making online purchases.
When drilling down further, the survey discovered that the most commonly adopted security protocols by wary shoppers globally include flagging suspicious website links or unusual website design (65%), verifying seller authenticity (62%).
When it comes to respondents in Malaysia, Kaspersky discovered that 77% of respondents reported strong self-awareness for online security measures which is higher than China (66%) and India (54%).
While the price of awesome shopping is typically eternal vigilance, it’s still better to get peace of mind with a security solution and a robust refresher course in safe shopping online.
Kaspersky – 6 vital online shopping security tips
With a bird’s eye view on emerging cybersecurity threats, here’s Kaspersky’s 6 important security tips for safe shopping online:
#1 Never save your full credit card details on websites unless absolutely necessary.
#2 Consider using a separate debit card specifically for online purchases and set up transaction alerts on your bank and credit card accounts.
#3 Be extra cautious of ‘flash sales’ that seem too good to be true. Watch out for websites that pressure you into making quick decisions, and be wary of sellers who refuse returns or exchanges.
#4 Use different passwords for each online account and enable two-factor authentication wherever possible.
#5 Apply a security solution with a strong anti-phishing component. For instance, Kaspersky Premium received the annual’Approved’ certification from the leading testing lab AV- Comparatives in 2025. It was awarded to Kaspersky Premium for detecting 93% of phishing URLs, demonstrating outstanding anti-phishing capabilities, powered by AI technology, and a commitment to safeguarding users’ digital lives and privacy.
#6 Scammers constantly evolve their methods, so staying informed about new phishing techniques can help you recognise and avoid them. Security blog will help you keep your finger on the pulse of emerging cyberthreats.
