The Nokia 8 Sirocco is HMD Global’s dream flagship phone
Nokia are certainly making waves at MWC2018 as they unveiled their pièce de résistance – the Nokia 8 Sirocco – the pinnacle of their upcoming line-up of phones for 2018.
Compared to the earlier Nokia 8, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is slightly thinner and a bit shorter while still packing more screen real estate. Externally, the Sirocco is hewn from stainless steel and glass with a 5.5-inch curved pOLED display up front that gently curves into the sides of the phone. The screen itself is brilliantly crisp with a 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The whole phone is sandwiched between two slabs of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back while maintaining a slim 7.5mm thin form factor. An added advantage of its steel and glass construction is that the Nokia 8 Sirocco is also rated at IP67 for water and dust resistance.
In terms of hardware, the phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor running a stock version of Android Oreo, comes with 6GB RAM and has 128GB of built-in storage with a microSD card slot offering additional storage expansion options. The integrated 3,260mAh battery aims to offer all-day longevity.
On the rear is a vertically aligned dual camera array. The primary 12-MP camera has an f/1.75 aperture while the second 13-MP telephoto camera has an f/2.6 aperture; both cameras pack Zeiss glass and the phone also has a dual LED flash for use under low light conditions.
The front sports a 5-MP selfie camera. Of note is that the phone is a part of Google’s Android One initiative so it’ll stay current with timely updates which Android purists will appreciate. In terms of pricing, HMD Global announced that the Nokia 8 Sirocco will retail at €749 which is about RM3,593 with a global release date sometime in April.
