Powerful new Synology ActiveProtect DP7400, DP340 and DP320 data protection solutions launched in Malaysia

In a briefing for invited guests and industry players, data management and security solutions provider Synology showcased their eponymous Synology ActiveProtect range of data protection appliances in Malaysia.

Intended for enterprise deployments and consisting of the Active Protect DP320, the ActiveProtect DP340 and the top of the line ActiveProtect DP7400, the new line-up aims to encompass enterprise backup software as well as server and backup repository support into a unified solution.

What are the Synology ActiveProtect solutions launched in Malaysia?

The compact Synology ActiveProtect DP320 is preconfigured with two 8TB hard disks in RAID 1 configuration, has a single 1GBe LAN, a 1GbE management port and is preinstalled with 8GB memory directly onto the backup appliance. 

The slightly bigger Synology ActiveProtect DP340 offers more memory to the tune of 16GB, packs 4 x 8 hard disk drives in RAID 5 configuration and 2 x 400GB SSDs. It also comes with a 1 x 10GbE LAN and a 1 x 1GbE management port.

Unlike the DP320 and DP340, the top of the line Synology ActiveProtect DP7400 dials everything to 11 with a preconfigured configuration that consists of 10 x 20TB hard disk drives in RAID 6, a hot spare and 2 x 3,840GB SSDS. It also packs 2 x 10GbE LAN ports as well as a 1 x 1GbE management and has 64GB memory installed directly onto the backup appliance with a redundant power supply for good measure when performing backups. It also offers a 5 year warranty unlike the smaller DP320 and DP340 which max out at 3 years warranty.

Beyond hardware, the ActiveProtect DP320, DP340 and DP7400 all feature Synology’s ActiveProtect Manager (APM) console support that allows users to view and monitor up to 150,000 workloads or the equivalent in 2,500 sites which provides a measure of scalability, data visibility and control. The ActiveProtect series all also offer air-gap capabilities and immutable backups along with the ability to offer fast incremental backups with global source-side deduplication to reduce network load by up to 99%, reduce storage needs by up to 50% and optimise operating costs. 

What makes Synology ActiveProtect particularly appealing for organisations is that it offers a unified, rapidly deployable solution that encompasses backup, recovery and management in a single appliance which vastly simplifies logistics and eliminates the need for separate hardware and software, sizing, purchase and maintenance.

Of particular interest is the emphasis on data security to protect vital data from ransomware with the ability to offer multiple restoration options including file-level restoration, bare-metal restoration and instant restore to Hypervisor.

Synology ActiveProtect also offers comprehensive workload support across the entire environment to protect PCs, Macs, file and physical servers, virtual machines, databases and Microsoft 365 services via a single seamless interface. 

In terms of pricing, Synology ActiveProtect solutions are a one-time purchase, with no additional subscriptions required on acquisition of the hardware  and the ability to manage up to three backup servers is also license-free with larger deployments with more appliances available via optional CMS licenses.

Synology’s ActiveProtect solutions are timely, bearing in mind the growing need to ensure reliable backups for business continuity in light of a growing wave of ransomware. According to Synology, nearly 59% of business organisations have encountered ransomware attacks with Malaysia rated as the country with the highest cybercrime index in Southeast Asia.
