Huawei has shipped over 10 million P9 and P9 Plus phones in 2016
Huawei recently released a report on their overall performance in 2016 and by all indications, they’ve done exceptionally well even in a bearish market. Globally, Huawei has shipped over 139 million phones and the numbers are going up, with 29% year-on-year growth despite a tough market with International Data Corporation (IDC), stating that global smartphone shipments increased by only 0.6% in 2016. Even so, Huawei managed to get 11.3% of the market share of the global smartphone market with a significant foothold in Europe. Drilling down, Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) the global entity that is the entirety of the Huawei group predicts sales revenue of 178 billion RMB which is a 42% steady year-on-year increase for the fifth consecutive year.
According to their report, Huawei managed to sell over 10 million of their P9 and P9 Plus phones globally; this is their first flagship phone to break the 10 million unit sales barrier. With a star-studded line-up that includes Henry Cavill who plays Superman in a host of DC movies and the eponymous Scarlett Johansson who has played a host of femme fatales including Black Widow and Major Motoko Kusanagi of the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live action movie, they’ve spared no effort in securing serious celebrity power with their phones. The P9 and P9 Plus also sport a dual camera setup with Leica-issued optics which has been refined for their new Mate 9 phone.
The Mate 9, which was recently launched last year in November had sales that were 50% more than its predecessor the Mate 8 which was sold the year before in roughly the same time period. While they’ve declined to list exact numbers, the Mate 8 in 2016 has sold over a million units or so: quite a sum by any measure. We’re looking forward to their performance for the coming year and if the trend continues, 2017 may just be their best year ever.
