realme C85 Review – Tough water resistant budget phone with huge battery tested
Budget phones typically compromise on a number of factors but in the case of the new realme C85, the brand is doubling down on two key features – durability and battery life.
After its recent debut in Malaysia, we managed to get our hands on a sample for field testing where it shined in its chosen strengths . If you’re on the fence, here’s our realme C85 review where we share if their toughest C-series phone walks the talk.

Table of Contents
Their latest C-series addition, the realme C85, is designed from the ground up to be one of the toughest and most durable phones in its class, all while packing a massive battery at a modest price.
Its headline feature is its IP69 Pro dust and water resistance rating—one of the first in its price range to claim this feature. This rating effectively combines IP69K, IP69, IP68, and IP66 protection, covering what many competing phones only manage partially and rarely all at once.

realme C85 review – The phone has an IP69 Pro rating for dust and water resistance as well as a MIL-STD-810H level of durability to shocks
With an IP69 Pro rating, the C85 can withstand high-pressure water jets, survive high-temperature steam cleaning, and stay submerged in up to a meter of fresh water for 30 minutes.
Realme’s testing went further: the C85 endured 30 minutes submerged in a range of liquids beyond fresh water, including household cleaning agents, gasoline, vinegar, soy sauce, cooking oil, curry, sodas, tea, coffee, milk, and even yogurt—though realistically, dropping your phone in a vat of any of these is highly unlikely unless you work in the food industry.
In more extreme lab tests conducted by realme, the C85 survived a remarkable 60 days in fresh water. Salt water remains a no-go, given its corrosive effect on electronics.
Durability isn’t limited to liquids. The C85 also carries a MIL-STD 810H rating, meaning it can handle most conventional drops and shocks. A reinforced high-strength aluminum alloy internal frame with shock-absorbing cushions also allows the phone to withstand the pressure of a 25kg barbell without bending, making it on paper one of the sturdiest budget phones in the market.
realme C85 review – Build and Design
Beyond its quoted IP69 Pro water resistance and MIL-STD-810H rated durability, the realme C85 has a fairly conventional design that adheres to contemporary smartphone aesthetics with a conservative looking flat backplate and front with rounded corners.
The backplate of our realme C85 review sample is done up in polycarbonate that comes in a shade they refer to as Parrot Purple. This works out to a light pastel purple finish with subtle feather motifs that lends the design a three-dimensional look though the finish is otherwise smooth to the touch. Beyond the distinctive feather motifs, the backplate also hosts a raised camera housing that hosts what seems to be a triple camera housing along with a Pulse Light notification light as well as an LED flash.
Closer inspection however reveals that there is only one true rear camera with a 50MP sensor with the remaining camera housings being there mostly for show.

To match the backplate, the sides also feature a light purple metallic finish. The base of the phone has a single downward-firing speaker paired with a USB-C port and a nano SIM card tray. The left and top portions of the phone are otherwise unremarkable with the right side featuring a power button and volume rocker.
Up front, the phone has a 6.8-inch LCD display which is one of the largest among budget phones in its price range though it only has HD+ (1,570 x 720 pixels) resolution. However, the display has an impressive 144Hz refresh rate and a 1,200 nits of peak brightness while offering a quoted 83% DCI-P3 colour gamut.
While logic would imply that there is some type of protective glass used to protect the display to merit its MIL-STD-810H rating, none of the official literature mentions just what type of glass is being used and seeing as this is a test sample, we weren’t able to put its durability to the test.
In terms of build quality, our realme C85 review sample does feel sturdy though it obviously looks and feels plasticky, a sensation reinforced when you feel the finish. Seeing its price point and its impressive level of drop, dust and damage resistance, it’s not a deal breaker.

Aesthetics and design aside, realme does add a decent array of kit along with the phone. Out of the box, you get the phone itself along with USB-C cable, a SIM eject pin as well as a casing which adds some value to the phone.
realme C85 Review – Performance and Benchmarks
Our realme C85 review unit comes with a distinctly midrange array of hardware, featuring a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor that has a 5G modem as standard paired with 8GB RAM augmented by up to 16GB of virtual RAM off the 256GB storage.
Keeping the phone powered is a massive 7,000mAh battery that supports 45W SUPERVOOC fast charging which is among the best in its price range. In a pinch, the realme C85 can also reverse charge other hardware like another phone though it’s somewhat slow, offering 6.5W charging speeds which are ideal for smaller gear like headphones and the like.
Of note is that the phone offers bypass charging for gaming sessions which allows you to directly power the CPU and other hardware and reduce wear and tear on the battery rather than having to constantly charge and drain it.
Running under the hood is Android 15 with realme UI 6.0 with support for Google’s Gemini AI as well as a Circle to Search function to Google items of interest onscreen by simply circling them.
Of note is the inclusion of realme’s AI Edit Genie that first debuted on the realme 15 that allows you to use voice or written prompts to edit photos. This time around though, realme has now added a ‘Inspiration Suggestions’ that allows for one-click intelligent editing with the AI offering suggestions on tweaking various aspects of the image for best results.

For Malaysia, realme is only issuing the C85 in one RAM/storage configuration though you get your choice of either Parrot Purple or Peacock Green colourways. With the full allocated 16GB of virtual RAM, our realme C85 review unit scored the following benchmarks:
| 3D Mark Steel Nomad Light | 153 |
| 3D Mark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited | 153 |
| 3D Mark WildLife Extreme | 383 |
| 3D Mark WildLife Extreme Unlimited | 370 |
| Geekbench 6 Single Core | 782 |

| Geekbench 6 OpenCL | 1,401 |
| Geekbench 6 Vulkan | 1,421 |
| Geekbench AI (CPU quanticised) | 1,014 |
| Geekbench AI (GPU quanticised) | 468 |
| PCMark Work 3.0 Performance | 9,652 |
| PCMark Battery Life | 13 hours 30 mins |
In terms of overall performance, our realme C85 review unit had capabilities similar to other phones that we’ve tested using the same chipset. The Dimensity 6300 is primarily intended for midrange devices and is able to handle the usual tasks expected of a budget phone including casual gaming on low settings for MLBB and CODM, web browsing and doomscrolling on TIkTok.
Battery life is impressive with our realme C85 review unit easily lasting shy of two days with casual use including liberal social media use, Whatsapp, a few minutes of phone calls, web browsing and light gaming.
The HD+ resolution of the display works in the realme C85’s favour, with the lower resolution allowing for less battery drain. This level of endurance was borne out by its PC Mark benchmark scores which are impressive with 13 hours and 30 minutes before needing a recharge.
While the provided display has rather low HD+ resolution, it’s sufficient for doomscrolling and catching the odd YouTube video or two with its large size making it ideal for senior citizens who need larger fonts and commensurately larger displays for a better viewing experience.
Screen resolution aside, the realme C85’s display stands out on account of its impressive 1,200 nits of peak brightness which allows for good clarity under direct sunlight conditions.
The screen also has a high 144Hz refresh rate though this is selective depending on what you’re doing onscreen with 120Hz refresh rates for the most part when you’re navigating the menus with most apps capped at 60Hz. Of greater value is its improved Wet-Hand touch tech that allows you to retain screen sensitivity even with wet or greasy fingers.

The mono speaker on the phone is unusual in that it has a larger acoustic chamber and is quoted to be able to offer up to 400% more volume than competing designs.
This allows it to kick out enough sound to be heard a dozen paces away when dialled to maximum 400% volume but sound staging, bass and detail are understandably underwhelming. It’s sufficient for casual listening for YouTube videos and the odd Netflix show or two and possibly gaming but a proper stereo setup still outpaces it.
realme C85 review – Cameras
The realme C85 has a relatively basic camera setup with the rear hosting a single 50MP f/1.8 camera that supports PDAF but lacks optical image stabilisation (OIS) which means you’ll need steady hands to yield decent shots.
On paper, the camera is able to offer up to 10x digital zoom for stills and video and up to 1080p@30fps video capture. The front hosts a single 8MP f/2.0 camera with up to 1080p video capture.
In daylight conditions, the camera is able to yield decent shots at up to 2x zoom though the lack of OIS means that you’ll need steady hands to achieve the best results.
In dim light conditions where the phone experiences noticeable shutter lag and shots end up looking soft and grainy – it’s acceptable for social media posts though shots even at 1X also end up looking on the soft side and lack detail. This is also the case for the front selfie camera which works best in brightly lit conditions.
Should you buy the realme C85?
The realme C85 is a budget phone with an emphasis on offering superior battery life and robust dust as well as water resistance along with a large display that is bright enough for outdoors use.
There are tradeoffs though as the camera setup is underwhelming at best and screen resolution isn’t particularly sharp though the large size of the display does have its virtues. If you prize endurance and durability in a budget phone, the realme C85 is an excellent choice.
