Sega unlocks their gaming classics for free on iOS and Android under Sega Forever label
Sega has a massive library of gaming classics from their old consoles like the Sega Master System and the only credible competitor to the venerable Nintendo Super NES back in the day – the Super Megadrive. The consoles are veritable antiques now and though the ROMs are available on emulators after a fashion, there hasn’t been an official release of sorts. Until now. Sega has just unleashed their Sega Forever label seeks to rerelease all these old games from the musty vaults of yesteryear and throw in modern day conveniences like cloud saves and Bluetooth controller support.
Sega aims to release a set of games monthly and the first wave of free games consists of Sonic the Hedgehog, side-scrolling punch-em-up Altered Beast, Phantasy Star II the RPG, Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone. Getting about is mostly via virtual buttons on the screen with the option of Bluetooth controller support and there’ll be ads popping in ever so often unless you fork out a nominal one-off sum which gets rids of the ads and offline save support.
By default, all the games have cloud saves when you’re connected to the internet though if you pay that one-off sum, you also get offline saves too for certain games. Arcade games like Altered Beast don’t require a cloud save option per se but for massive, grind-intensive games like Phantasy Star II, it’s almost mandatory unless you have an immense tolerance for pain (and time on your hands). Sega is slated to release new games monthly though there’s no official list of what’s coming next. To get started on a nostalgia laden game fest this holiday, just search for Sega on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
