Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) – Sleek Workhorse 24-inch All-In-One PC Tested

All-in-one PCs remain a popular choice on account of their convenience and compact dimensions as they combine a large display and a PC into one form factor that can be powered by a single cable.
Asus continues to expand on the form factor, with their latest model, the V600 AiO aka model VM640KA  intended as a modestly specced choice for general computing with the ability to act as a secondary monitor.

Ahead of Chinese New Year, Asus issued us a sample for field testing. After taking it for a spin, here’s our Asus V600 AiO review where we suss out if it deserves a place in your home or office setup.

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) – Build and Design

Unlike a traditional desktop setup with a bulky tower and a mess of cables, an all-in-one PC builds the hardware directly into the display. The result is a cleaner setup powered by just a single cable, cutting down on both clutter and footprint.

Out of the box, the V600 comes with a modestly sized power brick with a DC-IN jack that has a meter or so length of cable to accommodate short distances from a wall plug. It also ships with a wireless mouse and a full-sized wireless keyboard complete with numeric keypad. Both the keyboard and mouse work off a 2.4Ghz USB-A dongle that also ships with the V600.

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) keyboard

While it is generous of Asus to ship the V600 with a keyboard and mouse, both designs look and feel plasticky. The keyboard is not backlit and also requires a pair of AAA batteries to run which are housed in an underside battery bay.

Oddly, the wireless mouse requires a larger sized single AA battery for power with a built-in recess on its underside for the 2.4GHz dongle. As a nice touch, Asus has kindly provided a set of batteries to power both devices out of the box.

As all-in-one PCs go, our Asus V600 AiO review sample has a stylishly minimalist look about it that won’t look out of place in a home or office setup. The square shaped pedestal that holds the entire affair up is made of metal with a connecting stand that has an oblong-shaped hole in the middle that acts as a cable organiser.

The stand itself is also made of metal with a mechanism that allows for a modest amount of upwards and downwards tilt but lacks any side-to-side tilt or height adjustment. On the bright side, the tilt mechanism pans smoothly allowing for precise adjustments up and down to taste though you can’t radically alter the angle too much.

Up front, the main draw to the V600 AiO is a 23.4-inch NanoEdge LCD display with Full HD (1,920 x 1080) pixels resolution, a wide 93% screen-to-body ratio and a 16:9 aspect ratio.

While the side and top bezels are relatively slim, the bottom bezel remains a bit on the chunky side. The display also has a modest 75Hz refresh rate, 100% sRGB colour gamut and 250 nits peak brightness which means that it isn’t ideally suited for serious gaming or for content creators who require faithful colour reproduction.

To cater to mobile workers and students working long hours, the display notably boasts of a TÜV Rheinland-certified eye care and low-blue light emission certification. The display also has a matte anti-glare coating that helps to mitigate harsh overhead neon lighting for a more comfortable viewing experience.

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) side

In terms of ports, the Asus V600 AiO has a fairly comprehensive array mostly placed in a row on the rear with a select few on the lower right.

The rear of the display hosts a power button, a single HDMI-out port if you want an additional monitor to accompany your PC, a trio of USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a HDMI-in port if you want the V600 AiO to act as a monitor, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 1 port and a DC-in port for power.

Up top, our Asus V600 AiO review sample hosts a 1080p webcam with an IR camera  that supports Windows Hello authentication. To keep things simple, Asus has elected to mount the camera in a retractable mount that requires you to physically raise and lower it for use.

The lower right of the display hosts a single USB Type-A 2.0 port, a microphone port, a Kensington lock, and a novel HDMI mode button that allows the Asus AiO to turn into a pure display when hooked up to another PC or laptop.

Unfortunately, the Asus V600 AiO lacks any built-in card reader which means you’ll have to buy an external dock. On either end of the base are a pair of downward-firing 5W speakers

Our Asus V600 AiO looks and feels well built save for the plasticky keyboard and mouse. The matte black finish also nicely helps to repel fingerprints. A missed opportunity here is that it lacks any VESA mount so you’re not able to mount it on a wall and you’re relegated to the provided stand.

3D Mark Night Raid 18,267

PCMark 10 (Extended Work) 5,934

Short of serious video editing tasks or high-end gaming dialled to 11, our Asus V600 AiO review unit was able to handle multi-tabbed web browsing, light photo editing, paperwork and most spreadsheets as well as last-generation 1080p gaming on low or medium settings.

For gaming, AiO was able to run casual games like Kingdom Two Crowns without issue and was able to handle most non-competitive last-gen single-player games like Tomb Raider and Far Cry 5.

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) cinebench

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) pcm

For Far Cry 5’s benchmark test, our Asus V600 AiO managed to get an average 22fps on low settings while the Rise of the Tomb Raider managed to get an average of 59.5fps on normal settings. It was also able to run the usual e-sports games beloved by Malaysians like Valorant and DOTA 2 without issue.

The 23.8-inch FHD LCD display is bright enough for indoors use and the matte finish helps to mitigate the glare from reflective overhead lighting.

Colour rendition isn’t flawless as 100% sRGB still falls short of the 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut needed for content creators but it does the job for web browsing and paperwork with sufficiently vibrant colour rendition and detail. The 75Hz refresh rate isn’t fast enough for professional e-sports but is adequate for casual solo gaming.

Asus V600 AiO Review (VM640KA) view

The display was also surprisingly good for movie watching duties and the AiO’s display was able to serve up pleasant colours and good detail. The Fifth Element’s vivid scenery looked vibrant onscreen while Greyhound’s scenes depicting naval battles in the Atlantic showed good detail and managed to offer good contrast even with the restrained palette of blues and greys in the movie.

Unfortunately, this is where the V600 AiO’s speakers come into play. While they are reasonably loud, they lack bass and detail and sounded underwhelming when playing test footage. Greyhound’s intense sounds of shipboard cannon and intense ocean waves splashing about sounded flat with little depth or sound staging. It does the job for catching the odd YouTube video or two but isn’t the most stellar option on test.

Short of serious content creator tasks or triple-A gaming, the Asus V600 AiO proved to be a highly capable general purpose workhorse for most normal tasks encountered by students, professionals and home office workers. What makes it particularly unique is that it can function as a second display for another PC, which lends it some degree of longevity when you get more powerful hardware later on down the line.

Should you buy the Asus V600 AiO (VM640KA)?

All in, the Asus V600 AiO proves to be a competent workhorse design with a compact footprint that is ideally suited for general computing duties like paperwork, movie watching, retro gaming and casual content editing duties.

Hitech Century Bronze Award

If you need a workhorse for a mostly static setup without too much moving around and require a larger screen than what a laptop can offer, the Asus V600 All-in-One is well worth a look though it comes at a slight premium on account of the recent increase in RAM prices.
