At the press conference, Mr. Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of the DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung Electronics shared more about Samsung’s endeavours in creating a more sustainable future and also in their efforts to introduce a calmer, more connected world with seamlessly connected technologies in order to enable more personal, better and intuitive experiences.

To be sure, Samsung’s sustainability efforts aren’t something that’s happened overnight and they’ve continuously endeavoured to make the world a better place.

Among their ongoing efforts is their Samsung Global Goals app that is preinstalled on Samsung devices and which helps to raise money for a more sustainable world, using ocean-salvaged nets to create components for the Galaxy S22 series, offering more sustainable packaging and more.

It’s not just hardware though as Samsung is also helping to save wasted energy in a host of connected Samsung products and devices via their AI Energy Mode and SmartThings energy functions as part of their ongoing Everyday Sustainability initiative that aims to create sustainable products through innovative materials and energy efficiency.

At the Samsung CES 2023 press conference, Samsung shared that all of their businesses will match their electricity needs with renewable energy and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 while the DX Division will transition to 100% renewable energy by 2027 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

By building sustainability into the product experience, we, and the many people around the world who use our products, can contribute to a healthier planet,” said Inhee Chung, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability Center at Samsung. “As a result, some of our most popular products are now some of our most sustainable.”

At the Samsung CES 2023 press conference, the brand also shared that they were in discussion with outdoor clothing brand Patagonia on solutions to combat microplastics in the environment and how both they and Patagonia were developing a Less Microfiber Cycle wash technology that reduces microplastic release by 54% during a laundry cycle that will be introduced into Samsung washing machines. The collaboration also saw the creation of a Less Microfiber Filter that reduces microplastic discharge after a wash cycle.

A huge feather in Samsung’s hat is the announcement that their SMart Home Energy Management System that is implemented in a host of their connected home products has earned the vaunted ENERGY STAR SHEMS Certification.

Samsung CES 2023 – Broader connectivity and security

To create a calmer, more connected future, Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings shared how they were aiming to increase interoperability with their products and other brands to allow more devices to be connected with each other via the Matter smart home standard championed by the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) of which Samsung is a founding member.

On that note, Samsung also announced a new partnership with Phillips Hue and their range of lighting solutions with an eye to enable ways to sync content from Samsung TVs with Phillips Hue lighting using the Philips Hue Sync TV app.

At the Samsung CES 2023 press conference, they also shared their SmartThings Station that has built-in Matter support baked in, turning it into an effective smart home hub.

With even more connected devices comes a need for even more safety and security and Samsung’s Knox Matrix aims to ensure that sensitive information is protected even while credentials are synced across connected devices via private blockchain tech.

All these innovations are in their infancy but they are certainly a promising look at the future. For more details, check out their official CES news site at https://news.samsung.com/my/samsung-shares-vision-to-bring-calm-to-the-connected-device-experience-at-ces-2023
