TM Roh shares more on what’s on the horizon for Samsung and the world in 2021
The current President and head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business which oversees their best-selling smartphones, Tae Moon Roh or TM Roh as he is better known in most circles, took over the reins from DJ Koh earlier this year though he’s had a storied career in Samsung for many years.
TM Roh joined Samsung in 1997 and prior to being President and head of their mobile phone business, he helmed their R&D outfit in their IT and mobile communications division which gives him a meticulous and rather distinctive technical perspective which has held the company in good stead amidst the nightmare that’s 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic raging across the globe.
Under his watch, he’s spearheaded the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, which saw the Galaxy S20 Plus 5G becoming the world’s best-selling 5G device for the first half of 2020. He’s also seen the release of the flagship Galaxy Note20 series this year along with a slew of premium foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold2. To date, Samsung has launched 20 5G capable Galaxy devices in their ecosystem which is quite a feat indeed.
In a blog post earlier this year, he talks about the new era that we live in as the “Next Normal” and how as leaders of the tech industry, Samsung has a special responsibility to help society move forward with new ways to communicate, new ways to work and new ways to connect.
As can be seen in their recent moves, they’re expanding their portfolio of 5G capable devices so that it’s not just their super premium and high-end phones that have it but midrange and increasingly entry-level phones as well like the Galaxy A51 5G and the Galaxy A42 5G.In his latest blog post, TM Roh shared more about what is to come in 2021 for Samsung’s next generation of devices.
Better on-device AI capabilities
Table of Contents
TM Roh has mentioned that a key emphasis for developers and engineers is the enhancement of on-device AI capabilities within the Samsung Galaxy family to continually learn and optimise performance in order to enhance battery life, optimise displays and take better photos. Future devices in the Samsung Galaxy line will likely feature these capabilities and compound the benefits from next generation’s enhanced hardware by several fold.
Open source research and collaboration with more ultra-wideband (UWB) devices
In the post, TM Roh has mentioned that Samsung will be rolling out “incredible connectivity capabilities that will transform the way you open doors and enable seamlessly integrated car experiences that make personalised car connectivity a part of your digital life”. He adds that one new feature courtesy of ultra-wideband will be a way to find the things that matter the most and which keep getting lost like your wallet or car keys.
Personalised experiences and better security
One of the biggest worries of smartphone users is their data falling into the wrong hands whether its a photo or login details. According to TM Roh, their number-one goal “is and will always be to create experiences that people can trust, knowing we’ll treat their data with the utmost care and keep their personal information safe every step of the way”. He alludes to new devices that offer incredible personalised mobile experiences and will be huilt with security and privacy top of mind.
More Foldables in 2021
One of the key mentions in his post is that they will be bringing in more foldable phones next year. TM Roh said,” True to our heritage of staying ahead of the curve with trailblazing mobile tech, we’ll be expanding our portfolio of foldables, so this groundbreaking category is more accessible to everyone.”
Better cameras
Another interesting snippet update mentioned for the next generation of smartphones from Samsung is that they’ll all have better cameras which is a given but it’s good to know. TM Roh’s post mentions that “And while we’re already known for our revolutionary cameras, we’ll never stop trying to outdo ourselves — so be on the lookout for super-intelligent, pro-grade camera and video capabilities in 2021.”
When is the next Galaxy?
Last but not least, he strongly hints that the next Samsung Galaxy series phone will be launching very early next year in January. Stay tuned for more updates!
