AMD takes the wraps off their revamped Radeon RX 500 series graphics cards
AMD’s recent summit at the Majestic Hotel a couple of weeks ago was a hushed affair behind closed doors as they unveiled their next generation cards to invited guests. This, lads, is what you’ve been waiting for: their next generation Radeon RX 500 series graphics are now official and available as of today.
The new AMD RX500 series cards consist of the new Radeon RX580, the RX570, the RX560 and the RX550. The new cards all pack the improved mid-range Polaris GPU that initially saw service last year. All of the new cards are optimised for DirectX 12 for the latest games, offer Vulkan gaming support, have Radeon FreeSync technology for better gaming performance on screens that support it and have a beefed up cooler fan system which consists of a dual-fan cooler array bar the entry level RX550 which only has one that ensures better gaming performance without cooking off. The cards all also come with Radeon ReLive that aims to support smooth live game streaming even on lower powered systems. Another feature on the new cards is their Radeon Chill tech that dynamically manages in-game frame rates, getting the card to go in full throttle when you’re in the thick of it and dialling things back down when things are more sedate onscreen to reduce temperature, increase battery life and save on juice when you’re gaming.
The highest end card, the Radeon 580 has a higher base clockspeed of 1,257Mhz and a boost clockspeed of 1,340mHz and has 8GB of GDDR5 memory. The card offers 1.3x higher performance versus the Strix GTX 1060 (6GB) and is optimised for 1440P gaming which is still very serviceable unless you’re the select few who trick out all the hardware they have to the nines.
With Radeon Chill tech running, the Radeon RX580 was able to offer 64% quicker response time and 28% lower GPU power draw which translates to 6ms in response time and 91W versus 126W without Radeon Chill on in a game of Overwatch.
On the other end of the fence, the Radeon RX550 aims to offer an affordable yet smooth gaming experience. The card offers a 1,184Mhz boosted clockspeed, has 8 compute units and has 2GB of GDDR5 memory.
Versus an Intel integrated graphics solution such as the Intel HD 530, it was able to offer five times better performance and twice as better performance versus a Radeon R7 250.
With Radeon Chill activated, it is capable of offering 60% better response time, 20% lower GPU power and runs 14 degrees Celcius cooler than without in a test run of CS:GO.
The nature of the new cards means that decent gaming experiences are becoming more and more affordable and that’s an awesome bonus for those with a tight pursestring. The new Radeon 500 series cards are available from today. For more details swing by www.amd.com
