The report, dubbed ‘Past the Starting Line: Adapting to Malaysia’s Digital Consumers in 2023’ has a sample of 2,150 Malaysian buyers as well as 1,087 sellers and was conducted by Shopee Malaysia between 23rd December 2022 through to 5th January 2023 .

The state of the world notwithstanding, the ‘Past the Starting Line: Adapting to Malaysia’s Digital Consumers in 2023’ report stated that 60% of Malaysian buyers remained steadfast in achieving their ambitions and enjoyment in e-commerce in 2023 which is impressive optimism indeed.

In the report, 35% of Malaysians aim to prioritise personal health and wellness in 2023 with 39% of buyers looking to buy more home and living products in 2023. This impetus for self improvement has 26% of those surveyed aiming to make better lifestyle and living choices, 23% looking to upskill and expand their hobbies, 16% looking to enhance their social confidence, 38% looking to acquiring household goods, 13% in skilling up through books and oddly enough through games while 10% aim to get more workout and travel gear.

Another interesting insight is that 51% of buyers are seeing the importance of greater personalisation and shopping flexibility for 2023 with 32% of Malaysians looking to explore more of Shopee’s circle deals and live shopping experience while 17% aim to support local inclusive businesses more.

On that note, 5 in 10 buyers expressed interest in supporting local businesses in Borneo to improve their living standards while 35% were considering shifting preferences to shop for more local goods.

Shopee also shared that 7 in 10 Malaysians are striving to make smarter purchasing decisions through more insightful, informed content like live demos and unboxing videos to ensure that they get something worth their money.
